While there are no bones about it,
an attempted theft in Dearborn Heights
caught our attention today,
not only because of how the alleged thief was caught, but
what specifically they took.
Fox 2's Dave Kinchin live from Dearborn Heights with the bizarre
details awfully close to Halloween time,
but that's precisely where this story started, Dave.
Yeah, that's right. And they did not have
a skeleton crew in terms of policing to
respond to this. In fact,
I can tell you that Dearborn Heights had the literal heads up because
not only where we are right now, we're at Dearborn Heights PD,
but not only was this super close where
this all happened, this is where the Home Depot is on Michigan Avenue,
literally next door. But
take a look at this. We'll go to the video
and what you'll see is that the video from the police
drone sent to us by Dearborn Heights police shows
this woman with what is reported to be
$600 worth of huge 12-foot Halloween skeletons allegedly swiped
from the Home Depot we just
showed you. Now, you can see that the drone locked
in on the situation pretty quickly.
At one point, you will see the woman appearing
to dump the goods in an alley nearby, maybe to
come back for them later when the heat is off as the old criminals
or alleged criminals used to say
not only did Dearborn Heights police have this eye in the sky they
also are based next door so
they didn't have to go too far to apprehend
her but it's another case of police departments using
drones to solve crime so we ask people how they
feel about police drones taking stuff and getting
caught that's their problem they shouldn't have done it a police drone
going up how do you feel about that I seen it before
and they capture some
guys hurting critters at the Rouge there
so I like that they shouldn't have
done anything stupid I'm really
for that so you're for the drones for the drones
yes unless they're behind me
and then I'm not for it but other than that I
think we we got something right over here it's something like hiding or
something you can you can find you like anywhere like two seconds
so no problem with the police
drone no fun we listened to and watched of course
the full cut of the video about nine minutes that
the police department sent us as we come back live here
in Dearborn Heights and we could hear
the dispatch call uh the description of the woman
also and that's when that drone which may have
already been in the air
when that call came through started to lock in on the situation again
didn't have to fly too far the police department's right next door
but it's another case of how
drones are being used as first responders responding
to a variety of calls we're going
to take a look at that tonight on the edge at 11
o'clock many police departments across the state
using drones how they're using them
that's straight ahead in less than an hour reporting
live in Dearborn Heights, Dave Kim, Fox 2 News.
Dave, just curious about what may have happened
in the moments before we saw this woman dump
these big boxes of these skeletons in that field there
near the school bus. When she was leaving the store,
did she just simply have these that she
swiped off the shelves and was walking out of the store
and no one checked her receipt? No one
checked to see if perhaps she was actually someone
who purchased these things? Yeah, it's a big
question we were checking into actually did speak
with the manager the night
manager tonight who didn't really even know about
this whole situation it was
we actually broke the news to them believe it or believe it not so it's
probably a manager of a different shift
that may have that information and
police are still working
on getting some information back to us as well all right
our Dave Kinchen for us live tonight Dave thank you
