I heard you say that hate is not acceptable,
and I think that that should be a non-partisan
issue for our province.
Sure, sure.
The foundation of our province's success
is that this is a welcoming place.
You can come here and you can be safe regardless
of your religion, the color of your skin,
where you came from.
That is foundational to the success of our economy and our province.
And yet I heard you minimize the comments
of your campaign director two years ago.
She called the mayor of New York a jihadist mayor.
Just three weeks ago, she said,
if you're concerned about hate against Muslims, then you have
a suicidal empathy, and that is the problem with the West.
Her Twitter feed, at points,
reads like the worst corners of the dark web.
And you stand here today in the face of a call from national Muslim
organizations to say, hey, we need to feel safe in this province,
and she's going to continue as your campaign director.
Mr. Eby, let me make this clear. You had a woman leave your caucus
because either they didn't feel safe or they didn't feel supported
with respect to comments made by many in your caucus room.
You have somebody right now that is denouncing police in this province.
You wrote a book about how to sue the police.
Trust me when I say this, that is not leadership in this province.
You currently have the past attorney general
with racism on her own social media.
The reality is this has happened.
It's a serious issue, but what shocks me the most, Mr. Eby,
is that you would come after this woman who has absolutely
been the survivor of sexual violence in this province, and the fact
that I've given her grace, I would have hoped that you might have too.
Well, let's talk about Heather Maas.
Today we found out that Heather Maas, your candidate in Chilliwack,
confronted a fellow MLA, her colleague, Eleanor Sturko,
and told her that she was immoral for being gay.
This is one of a series of comments of Heather Maas attacking people
who are gay, suggesting they're secret pedophiles,
bringing in a group to the legislature that promotes
the idea that people who are gay are immoral.
Does that qualify as hate for you, Lauren?
Well, David, does anti-Semitic behavior
in your caucus qualify as hate or not?
Because Selina Robinson left your caucus
because she didn't feel safe or didn't feel supported by you.
Do you approve of the comments that Nikki Sharma has made
with respect to racism in this province?
Where do you draw the line, David?
I hear a lot of dodges. I think British Columbia should know.
I hear quite a few dodges from yourself.
Do you think, I'm happy to cover all those topics,
Do you think that telling a colleague in a professional setting that
they are immoral for being gay, do you think that is hate, yes or no?
I will always stand against hate,
but I ask you a question as well, and I'd love to hear the answer.
Antisemitism is unacceptable.
Every one of our MLAs goes through antisemitism training
to ensure that they understand and they're able to identify it
and prevent it and fight hate.
We are committed to fight hate, but Lorne, again,
one more time, I'll ask you one more time.
A non-answer is clearly all
of the information British Columbia needs to know.
Is it inappropriate, is it hateful to confront someone
in a professional environment at work
who is gay and tell them they are immoral?
Is that hateful to you?
I would see that as hate for certain.
Now what I really want to know
is will you remove candidates from your caucus as well,
candidates that are right now denouncing police,
right now putting racism on their social media.
David, it's right there. You know that.
So will you denounce those comments?
Will you open up to the people of British Columbia
and explain what happened with Selina Robinson?
Well, Selina made some unfortunate
comments about Palestine on a media event.
I had to ask her to step down from cabinet.
So what about the other individuals that have been known?
Why won't you show that leadership?
Did the training come after Selina left or before?
