Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe Dallas Cowboys have re-signed running back Amari DiMercado and released offensive lineman Nick Leverett, who is expected to join the practice squad. These roster adjustments come as the team prepares for a critical \"must-win\" matchup against the Green Bay Packers, with a specific focus on stabilizing the running back rotation and improving offensive efficiency.
The Dallas Cowboys have just made multiple moves including
a sneaky signing. We talk about the
latest from Jerry Jones, the movement inside the roster,
and what this means moving forward
specifically for a key offensive position.
We talk about all those details and so much more
as we get ready for a pivotal matchup
this upcoming Sunday versus the Green Bay Packers
and what is I'm going to say as close to a must win
as there has been in a bit for the Dallas
Cowboys. Welcome in to the channel.
I'm Jace Andrews and I hope you're having a great day
wherever you guys might be if this is your first
time joining us here on Cowboys Digest we'll go
down there and hit that subscribe button we've
got shorts live streams and videos just like this
covering the Dallas Cowboys all year long let's start
though exactly with that news talking about
the moves being made and it comes in the running back room
the Cowboys are expected and now have
confirmed to re-sign Amari DiMercato now
if you don't remember Amari DiMercato he's a TCU guy and
played his college football with the Horned Frogs actually
was with Arizona for the first three
seasons of his NFL career and then this offseason signed
with the Kansas City Chiefs was on their
practice squad before the Cowboys signed him off their practice squad
and was actually on the 53
roster for a couple of days ultimately he did get cut from the Cowboys
and now he is expected to
re-sign here with Dallas Todd Archer was the one
who had the report first right here and of course
this does come after another move
which is part of this multiple moves system they released
offensive lineman Nick Leverett
but we now know the plan is for Leverett to join the practice squad
after his official release so Amari DiMercato RB3 on the team
and of course makes for an
interesting choice an interesting I guess
conversation about the running back room for
this upcoming week versus the Green Bay Packers now speaking
of this game on Sunday on Sunday
night football I'm trading yes on the Dallas Cowboys
to win this game I'm feeling confident
Looks like Micah Parsons is not going to play,
so don't have to worry about that.
And if the Cowboys can get this much-needed win,
going to be a tough one, of course, with Green Bay,
then they are going to be in a good spot.

them for sponsoring today's show.
As for Amari DiMercato, this is a pretty good thing
when you look at the running back room.
Now, I don't want to throw shade at anybody in the running back room.
Javante has not been as advertised,
but I still think there's some good things about him.
And of course, I think there's a lot to say about Tyler Goodson.
He's actually been, I want to say, an underrated piece.
Hunter Lipke, although he's a running back, he's more of a fullback,
and that's the way he should stay in my mind.
So this kind of puts a little bit more
or less pressure on Lipke to play that running back room.
So personally, I do think that DiMercato is a good fit.
Plus, he also does understand the system,
given he was on the roster earlier this season.
Now, as for kind of why the Dallas Cowboys are kind of moving around
with the waivers here, the original thing that happened with DiMercato
was when they activated Tyler Smith off of injured reserve
and they then waived Amari DiMercato.
So I think in a lot of ways, they wanted Amari on this team,
but he was just the odd man out when it came to adding back
in a player of Tyler Smith's caliber, obviously.
Usually, I mean, I know it's not positional wise, but usually you
sign somebody or get somebody off the IR on the offensive side.
You're going to cut somebody on the offensive side,
especially with how many injuries they've had in the defense
and how many people about to sign on that side.
It was just an unfortunate kind of, I guess, collateral move.
But I do think that this is a good thing.
Now, we do know that the corresponding move, quote-unquote,
was to waive offensive lineman Nick Leverett, and now, of course,
we know that Leverett is signed to the practice squad as of today.
So, kind of a nice thing there that DiMercato was waived,
then Leverett waived, DiMercato expected back today, and Leverett,
of course, expected back on the practice squad in today as well.
Now, I think what's funny is when you look
at what the Cowboys practice squad looks like,
they do have a running back on there.
It's Israel Abukana.
Credit to Preston Taylor here, one of our comments on a recent video,
talking about how they should have let Israel Abukana go
and then kept Amari DiMercato on the practice squad.
I think they really wanted Amari on the 53-man roster,
and this was just a week of, hey, you know, we're going to let you off.
But I do kind of agree.
I know there was a chance for people to sign Imari.
Ultimately, it didn't happen, and they do get him back.
So, I think this is interesting
to talk about with the running back room
and how that kind of transpires with Tyler Goodson,
because he's still the RB2.
I don't want to take away from what he's done.
In fact, he's actually been, I want to say,
one of the most underrated pieces on this Cowboys team.
And I think that in a lot of ways,
he's not getting the credit that he deserves.
Now, is he putting up spectacular numbers?
No, it's nine carries and 34 rushing yards.
Nothing crazy is happening for him.
And if you compare him to what Amari DieMercado was doing,
five yards or five carries, 15 yards,
they're not all that different
and I think that the I guess history speaks more to Amari DieMercado
because if you look at what he was doing you know
with the Arizona Cardinals last year he had 38
rushing yards you know per game or in the first five games
then you know 15.8 so it was more or
less a little bit of a drop back
and I think that there is some of a bigger name in some ways with
Amari DieMercado, a lot more veteran experience,
but it is still Goodson's spot.
Of course, when you talk about RB2,
a bunch of things that have to, you know, kind of
decide it, I guess.
And the big thing is protection and third down reliability.
Who's the better pass catching back?
I think in a lot of ways, it's probably still
Tyler Goodson, but DieMercado, obviously,
liked by the Cowboys and will have a chance
to kind of maybe play RB2.5 in a way.
So, again, experience here is why I think that they will go with Amari
and RB2 five weeks down the road.
But it's interesting, and I got a comment here talking about how
the Cowboys get worse every year,
and they're hiring no-experience coaches.
I think it also is a thing with the players
of getting the right experience in there,
but I do think it all goes back to Javante Williams
and really not performing to the way that we expect.
I don't want to say he's sitting here doing bad things.
That's not what I'm trying to say.
But 276, 3.7, and the six touchdowns are good through five games.
But I just expected more.
I mean, you're talking about, what, 50-ish yards per game
with what he's doing, 50, 55, 57 yards per game.
I don't love those stats.
I don't hate them, but I certainly think that they could be better.
And that is somewhat of a reason
of why you're looking at this running back room
and, you know, consistently thinking you should get some extra plays.
Now, I think the problem with Javante is more or less the game plan.
He has 37% of his runs just going straight up
the gut instead of trying to get to the
outsides.
In fact, only 7% goes to the right or left end.
Very not great.
And this EPA per carry is negative 0.01 yards.
Like, it's just everything about
the way they game plan Javante Williams makes no sense.
That's just the way.
I mean, they're not opening holes.
They're not blocking properly.
And he's just running up the gut.
And I get that a lot of that is because
he just gets to the touchdown area
and that's where he goes.
But I just like it more if we let his speed,
and although he doesn't have much, he doesn't have speed,
let him run to the outside a couple times.
Again, it's still going to be his backfield,
and I do think that that's not going to change.
It's not going to be something that is going to change
over the course of a couple weeks.
But I do think there needs to start being some more accountability
in the running back room, especially for Javante Williams,
and then the play calling as well.
And that's, you know, we talk so much about
the play calling on the Christian Parker side.
It also belongs on Brian Schottenheimer's side.
And, you know, that's a huge thing.
But now you do have three backs in the running back room.
You get some extra flexibility.
Obviously, it's a big thing.
But what sucks is that you wouldn't be in this position looking
at Tyler Goodson and Audric Estime as these,
you know, saviors or whatever you want to make of them.
Instead, you would have Malik Davis.
But this is just what you're in the position of.
And Malik had actually a pretty good 20-25,
especially at the very end of the season.
Had over 103 yards, obviously, in that last game.
47 against Kansas City on that Thanksgiving game last year.
He was the guy who we really did trust at the RB2 option.
But now, you know, it isn't going to be that way.
I do want you to get in the comments section,
and I'm curious to see what you think.
Obviously, who should be the running back two in Dallas?
Do you think Tyler Goodson deserves the job?
Do you think Amari, now that he's signed, should get the job?
Or do you think they should go sign somebody?
Do you think they're done with all
this and you don't trust either of those guys?
I think it's not worth it to go sign somebody,
but let me know in the comments section who
you think should be RB2 in Dallas.
Personally, if you ask me,
I do think that Tyler Goodson deserves it more than anybody
else.
He's looked solid, and as much as I want
to say Amari's got the veteran experience on
him, he hasn't looked good, and it took him
a little bit to learn the playbook.
I'm not saying that's a downgrade on him,
but it's certainly something to note.
And of course, we'll just wait
and see how Brian Schottenheimer plans it.
But the big thing is you've got to get this running game going.
I mean, the offense is fine.
I'm not going to sit here and say that the losses are on the offense,
but they're certainly not void of all punishment
in terms of why these losses are happening.
The offense is doing some bad things
just as much as the defense is doing some horrible things.
So we'll see what happens.
Green Bay's a big game.
We'll keep you up to date with everything else,
and we'll see you next time here on the show.
Peace out.
