Cowboys make another SNEAKY good move... This is PERFECT
Oct 14, 2026
The Dallas Cowboys have made another sneaky good move
and this is perfect for what is a struggling defense.
As we talk about the latest news on what the Cowboys
are doing to actively improve the defense
who ranks 31st in most categories in some 32nd in the NFL.
Jerry Jones talks about the role of Christian Parker moving forward
and why an important move now seems to be a final stand in some ways
for Christian Parker. We talk about it here today in Cowboys Digest.
So welcome, everybody, and we hope you're having
a fantastic day wherever you guys might be.
I want to know in the comments section today's video,
let me know what you think about Christian Parker.
Do you think he is a bust of a hire?
Do you think that it's just growing pains? Do you still have faith?
I want to know your thought processes down below
as we get throughout this video.
Let's start with the more recent news, and that is coming from, well,
Jerry Jones himself talking about what we can expect moving forward
for Christian Parker
and how the Cowboys plan to adapt to what
is a struggling defense once again.
And so we got this yesterday
from Jerry Jones saying that Christian Parker
will be moving to the coaching booth
on game days according to Jerry Jones.
Again, this was yesterday on his radio interview on 105.3.
The fan does it every Tuesday.
This is an important move and it signals a distrust, I would say,
is my thought process in Christian Parker.
And maybe that he's not seeing the field as properly as he should.
Now, I do want to, before I get too much into it,
give a little bit of credit to Christian Parker.
I'm not trying to say he's good or this or that.
But there are other first-year defensive coordinators
that are also struggling.
Jim Leonard, he's 30th in EPA per play.
Derontae Jones, a guy who we talked about
and potentially interviewed at one point.
He's 28.
The only guy who's done well is Jonathan Gannon,
who, I mean, he has a head coach in his career.
So, it's just kind of interesting the way that this falls.
Now, he's going to get a chance to try
and fix this defense in week number six
versus the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football.
I'm trading yes on Kalshi for the Cowboys to win this game.
$80 trade wins you $160.81.
On Kalshi, you're trading directly against other users,
not the house, like a traditional sportsbook.
You're buying yes or no contracts on the outcome
of events across sports, politics, or even the weather, for example.
If you are interested in trying out Kalshi,
we'll use the link in the description
or in the pinned comment of today's video.
And when new users sign up with this code right here,
DIGESTNFL, and trade at $25,
you're going to get an extra $55 immediately added to your account.
So go make the trade today on Kalshi,
one of the fastest-growing places you'll ever find.
We appreciate them for sponsoring today's show.
So I'm not trying, again,
to defend what we saw in this first five weeks,
and there are some horrendous play calls.
The third and 20 from this last week was a horrendous play call.
Week one against the Giants
was a horrendous calling formation for Christian Parker.
But at the same time, I do want to know
that this is his first defensive coordinating job,
and he wasn't really, I'm not going to say he was set up for success.
He wasn't set up to fail, for sure,
but it's obviously a lot to put on a first-year guy
coming off what is a miserable defense, and,
I mean, we got a lot of guys to improve it,
but it doesn't seem like it's improving.
This is important to note, though, Matt Eberflus,
a guy who, you know, we have our opinions about,
He also moved to the booth last year just
for the sake of trying to make the defense better.
Obviously, it didn't work.
In 2023, Mike McCarthy's offense looked off, and the 49ers.
In the Niners game, they were trying to do something different.
They got a new voice in the room.
The offense has improved a lot.
So you got a new voice in the room, potentially,
and that's what I'm kind of moving toward right now.
But what you are more importantly doing
is you're doing something that you did
with Matt Eberflus when the defense was struggling.
Now, who is that new voice in the room?
Well, it's a new hire, as we see here.
The Cowboys have hired Mike Pettine.
as a defensive assistant, he is a guy
who has got some history in the NFL and is very much
a renowned coach especially from the defensive side of the ball
and we had this from Tommy
Jarish and that Brian Schottenheimer announced it
a couple days ago now at this point saying
they hired former Browns head coach
and longtime NFL defensive coordinator Mike Pettine as a senior
defensive assistant Pettine was a DC in Green Bay
when Christian Parker was with the Packers from
2019 to 2020 so you got a little bit of connection there
and of course it is something that will show
the first sign of maybe the lack of faith
in Christian Parker Clarence tells us that Mike
Pettin will join the Cowboys first thing on Tuesday
so he's with them today for their first
practice of week number six they tried to get him
to join the staff in the spring he wanted to stay
retired they talked him into returning to the sideline
to help Christian Parker which of course
now we know um not gonna be on the sideline
so um we'll see what Mike Pettin actually ends up doing
if he's in the booth with Parker, if he's on the sideline.
It's important, though, to get this stuff going
because you are in a division that stinks.
I'm going to be so honest.
You are in a division that you can win.
The Giants, without Jackson,
are obviously tying the Commanders
in what should have been a loss, to be honest.
These teams should all be 2-3,
but Jane Daniels doesn't know how to play
clock management games,
so this is still a very winnable division,
as bad as you have played and as bad as you have looked.
This is going to be a time
where you have to figure things out quick, though,
because you are coming down to a point
where you've got to get stuff going.
Packers, Eagles, Cardinals, Colts.
You need to win three of those games, in my opinion.
I really think you do.
I think that's a huge step going forward
because then you've got the Niners
who are going to be a tough win.
The Titans should be a win, in theory.
Then you've got the Eagles again, of course, on Thanksgiving.
So going to be an interesting next couple of weeks.
And I think it's interesting that they decided
to make the decision right now,
but there is also some thought process behind that.
You know, the defense is struggling through five games.
It's now a guy who can step in to be a mentor with Christian Parker
and Brian Schottenheimer
just can't do that.
And for all the defensive assistants
that they did hire this offseason, they're not
going to be the veteran mentor that Mike Pettine will be.
Plus, they did obviously look for Pettine this spring.
They wanted him in this here in this room.
He decided to stay retired and now, you know,
monetary value, whatever it might be, they
convinced him to come back.
And again, it's not a change in the guard
of the defensive coordinator for Christian
Parker.
It's a, hey, we know you're in a bad spot right now.
We want to do everything we can to help you.
I want to go to this comment real quick here
from the real fit, real lit yo.
Either way, love all the comments, so make sure you keep putting them
because I want to put in all of them on our videos now.
But got a comment here saying, lifelong Cowboys fan,
Dallas is still their unworthiness, and the defense still sucks.
It does, and that's exactly why Mike Pettine
is hopefully the switch that we can have.
And, of course, we know that he has a proven credential
when it comes to his defensive time in the NFL.
We look at his career path here.
He was a Jets defensive coordinator
with the number one defense in 2009,
obviously all the way to 2012.
Then he went to the Bills, D.C. in 2013.
Brown's head coach didn't work out well for him in 2014 and 2015.
Then he went back to playing D.C. roles
with the Packers in 2018 and 2020,
where he was with Christian Parker before he retired
as a Vikings assistant head coach, 22 to 25.
Now, of course, he's going to come back to the NFL
as a senior defensive assistant I do think that there
is some thought process that he can come in
and just almost a calming thing in a lot of ways
and has done some good things in his tenure the
number one defense in his first year of being
a defensive coordinator in 2009 bodes well for a guy
who was in his first year and does not have
the number one defense whatsoever and I think that
that's going to be a big thing there now again he will reunite
with Christian Parker the connection
is obviously there and I think that's something
that was very important if you were going to do
something like this if you're going to add in a guy
who is going to i'm going to say help and not
be like oh we don't trust you
but more of a help piece it was going to be a guy who has had you
know some connection with Christian Parker
and guess what Pettine gave him his first job back in
2019 so really excited there uh Pettine is the right person
and the right fit to help Christian
Parker so it seems like this is very much something
that um you know we want to happen that Jerry
Jones talked about it. Brian Schottenheimer
talked about it. And this is going to be a good
thing for everything. Kind of just
overall, I think improving the game plan
is the biggest thing to me. Because that
we can talk about the play calling and all that stuff.
The game plan going into these
games, it just hasn't looked good.
And they are now in a position
where the one thing they have stopped or tried
to stop to do for the past four
years, and Jerry Jones has harped on, stop the
run, stop the run, stop the run. They can't
do it. And so how do they do that now?
Well, I'm going to get a new game plan in there.
And that's kind of what we can kind of saw
this past week versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The run defense was just wasn't good.
It wasn't wasn't very good at all.
I mean, even Jerry Jones,
he was just surprised at how bad it actually was.
Like, given what we've been doing,
it just it doesn't really make sense.
And it was a tough game.
Like, there's not much we can say other than this was a very bad game.
And I think it's the reason that we signaled,
you know, some help in this.
And in a lot of ways, signaled right now
with the hire Mike Pettine that we need to get something done.
The defense didn't play well.
The offense was looking just okay.
As a game, you should have won an 0-4 team with a rookie quarterback,
and ultimately you lose.
You've got to figure out something with that.
I think there's a lot of things that you can say about this team.
I think there's one thing you can't
say, and that they are going to quit.
This is going to be a team that will
continue to fight and fight and fight.
Again, I want to keep going to comments here from Keanu Picardo saying,
yes, we need more help on defense.
If we can't get help, please, Jerry Jones.
I want to see the Cowboys win us another Super Bowl in my lifetime.
Just trade and let's go.
we know that Jerry has said you know I'm
not afraid of making making uh an impact trade and
you know maybe that's the way that he does it here
with this upcoming you know trade deadline here so
we'll see what happens but I do think there's going
to be some measurements as we come up here
on the success or failure of Petten it's going
to be a pretty decent Packers team in terms of what
we've seen they're kind of on and off they looked
obviously pretty good over the past couple of
weeks and Jordan Love against the Bears
was lighting up the secondary so that's going to be
something to watch for but rushing yards shouldn't
be that much of a worry they don't have a lot of
running backs especially without you know Josh
Jacobs there missed tackles the explosive plays
pass rush and offensive communication to me is the biggest thing
but you still have time here in
the NFC East you still have your chance to go out there
and prove yourself but how much does Mike
Petten help this team will he fix them what will happen let us know
your thoughts in the comment
section with a y for yes saying he can make a difference
and in for no saying players are the
bigger problem or if it's too soon to know
and then type that's what we got for you today on
the show we appreciate you watching we'll have
another video out for you later today peace out
