The Quantum Immortality Experiment Nobody Is Allowed to Run
Could a quantum immortality experiment violate the Nuremberg Code? We examine the ethics of testing quantum mechanics on people.
In August 1947, judges at the Nuremberg trials established strict guidelines regarding human experimentation. Point 5 of the code explicitly prohibits any procedure where there is reason to believe death or disabling injury will occur. Yet, the theoretical pursuit of quantum immortality creates a paradox, as the premise relies on survival across branching quantum states.
The discussion covers the history of these ethical experiments and the scientific principles behind quantum phenomena. We look at how a physicist fifty years later proposed a scenario that challenges both the legal boundaries set after the war and our current understanding of how quantum mechanics functions in a laboratory setting.
