Chinguetti, Mauritania, March 2002. After more than two years of preparation, Régis Belleville sets out to cross on foot one of the most arid regions on Earth: the Majâbat al-Koubrâ, also known as the desert of deserts.

This cursed land, whose name in Arabic means the vast expanse of solitude, is said to be haunted by the legendary djinns who forever hold captive those who dare to enter.

From his departure point to Tombouctou, Régis—accompanied by N’Taha Ould Bouessif, his camel driver, and eight camels—must cover more than 1150 kilometers of dunes and sand. Without a single well along the way, they will have to travel in complete autonomy, facing a merciless environment.
