Joseph McKenzie (1929–2015) was a British photographer associated with social documentary work produced in Scotland during the post-war period. He was born in London and served as a photographer in the Royal Air Force between 1947 and 1952. After leaving military service he studied photography at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts from 1952 to 1954. McKenzie later worked as a photography lecturer, first at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London and from 1964 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, where he taught until his retirement in 1986.

During the 1960s McKenzie produced a series of documentary projects examining social conditions and urban change in Scotland. These included photographic studies of Glasgow, Dundee, and Dunfermline, documenting working-class communities, children’s street culture, and neighbourhood life during a period of redevelopment and industrial transition. One of his most widely known bodies of work, Glasgow Gorbals Children (1964–1965), recorded children and families living in the Gorbals district prior to large-scale housing clearance and reconstruction.

McKenzie also produced Hibernian Images between 1967 and 1969 while working in Northern Ireland. The photographs documented youth culture, street life, and sectarian divisions during the early phase of the political conflict that later became known as the Troubles. When the work was exhibited in the early 1970s it generated public controversy, leading McKenzie to withdraw much of the project from circulation for many years. His photographs were later re-examined in exhibitions and publications that situate his work within the development of British social documentary photography in the second half of the twentieth century.
