In July 2001, in the Djurab Desert in northern Chad, paleontologist Michel Brunet and his team announced a groundbreaking discovery: a 7-million-year-old fossil skull. Nicknamed Toumaï, it may be the earliest known representative of the human lineage.

This documentary follows the extraordinary scientific investigation that ensued: from meticulous fieldwork to the world’s leading paleontology laboratories, Michel Brunet tries to reconstruct the story of this unique fossil. For the first time, Toumaï’s ancient environment is brought back to life — a vanished world inhabited by crocodiles, giant turtles, and saber-toothed tigers.

A captivating journey to the origins of humanity, guided by an extraordinary scientist.
