“They've worked equally as hard to make the innards and the displays and everything else within the vehicle work to perfection.”
That’s what Doug Hurley said after experiencing Crew Dragon firsthand. And he’s not the only one. Many other astronauts have praised SpaceX’s spacecraft, highlighting its advanced design and highly capable control system—qualities that Boeing’s Starliner, developed around the same era, has struggled to match.

So, what makes Dragon’s control system so advanced that it has become virtually irreplaceable? Let’s find out.

For decades, spacecraft cockpits were built around one fundamental idea: if astronauts needed to control a machine, they needed a physical control for it. Switches, dials, circuit breakers, and control sticks filled the cockpits of spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle and Soyuz. Astronauts spent years learning where every control was located and how to operate it, often relying on muscle memory to react under pressure.
Then SpaceX came along and challenged that entire philosophy.
Inside Crew Dragon, there is no enormous wall of switches surrounding the astronauts. Instead, three large 17-inch touchscreens form the center of the control interface. Through them, the crew can monitor spacecraft systems, manage mission operations, and issue commands using a digital interface that looks remarkably different from the cockpits of previous generations.
But the real breakthrough isn't that SpaceX replaced physical buttons with glass screens. Anyone can install a touchscreen. The difficult part is building a control system that allows astronauts to operate a spacecraft traveling at orbital velocity, where a wrong command can have serious consequences.

And that is where Dragon becomes particularly interesting.
To understand the scale of this change, consider the Space Shuttle. Its cockpit contained more than a thousand switches, buttons, and other physical controls. Each control served a specific purpose, giving astronauts direct access to a wide range of spacecraft functions. The advantage was obvious: once trained, a crew member could reach for a familiar switch and operate it without navigating through a digital menu.
But this approach came with a cost. Every physical control required space, electrical connections, integration, and maintenance. The cockpit also had to accommodate the complexity of the spacecraft through a large number of dedicated interfaces.
SpaceX approached the problem from the opposite direction. Instead of building a separate physical control for every operation, Dragon uses software to bring the relevant controls onto the screen when they are needed.
