During the last ice age, the most southerly-dwelling humans on the entire planet were not in Europe or South America. They were in Tasmania, hunting wallabies beneath glaciers in open tundra valleys and sheltering in limestone caves beside fires. Scientists confirmed this in the journal Nature after finding 250,000 bone fragments and 75,000 stone artefacts in a single cave that represented one percent of the total deposit. The community that descended from those ice age survivors was officially declared extinct in UNESCO documentation until April 2023. They were never extinct. This is what scientists actually found at Cradle Mountain, and almost none of it appears on the sign at the trailhead.
