For more than a thousand years, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church kept in its canon a book the rest of Christianity stopped copying. In 1773, the explorer James Bruce brought several copies to Europe, and in the twentieth century the caves of Qumran returned Aramaic fragments of these same visions. Even the Epistle of Jude, in the New Testament, quotes one of its prophecies.

We follow Enoch chapter by chapter: the river of fire flowing into the great western sea, the abyss where seven stars are bound, and the mountain with four hollow places where, according to the archangel Raphael, the spirits of mankind await the great judgment. There, even the voice of Abel still cries out against Cain.

We will also see why Methuselah and Noah traveled to the ends of the earth to find Enoch, what the text says about the garden of the righteous in the north, and why the modern idea of an ice wall does not appear in its pages.

In the end, the answer is more unsettling than any rumor: the humans waiting beyond the frontier of cold are all of us.
