A massive star in the Andromeda Galaxy vanished without producing the supernova astronomers expected — and scientists think they may have witnessed the quiet birth of a black hole.
The star, known as M31-2014-DS1, faded by more than 10,000 times in visible light after showing a mysterious infrared brightening. Instead of exploding as a normal supernova, researchers believe its core may have collapsed while most of the remaining star fell inward, creating what astronomers call a failed supernova.
But the mystery didn't end there.
When the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observed the location, it detected something still glowing inside a cloud of dust. Now astronomers are investigating whether we're seeing the aftermath of a newly formed black hole — or whether another explanation, including a surviving hidden object or stellar merger, could explain what happened.
In this video, we explore M31-2014-DS1, failed supernovae, black hole formation, the latest JWST observations, and why some massive stars may disappear without the enormous explosions astronomers normally expect.
Could black holes be forming silently across the universe without us noticing?
