In 2024, Molokaʻi was the least visited of all the Hawaiian islands open to visitors. On an average day there were fewer visitors on the island than axis deer.
How does life work on a Hawaiian island that keeps choosing to stay small?
This 4K travel documentary begins on the main street of Kaunakakai, where people pick up bread and stop to talk, and on the shore, where a net still goes out by hand.
To see how people live on Molokai, we follow the island's West End, where a resort and a ranch once promised jobs, and look at why that plan closed in 2008. At the harbor, cruise ships and vacation rentals sparked a long argument. A community plan says the island is not turning visitors away. We then look at what the land and sea still give: fishing, fishponds, and axis deer, about 18,600 of them by the state's 2025 survey. Homestead land is held for Native Hawaiians.
The price of staying small shows up at the wharf. The barge from Oʻahu comes twice a week, and when it misses a sailing, the bread and milk run out. The journey ends below the sea cliffs of Kalaupapa and back in Kaunakakai, where the question of who comes, and on whose terms, is still open.
