Some four thousand years ago, at the southern end of the Jordan Valley, a plain of five cities lay at the lowest place on the surface of the Earth. The Book of Genesis remembers it as well watered everywhere, like the garden of the Lord. Five kings. Walled towns. Springs in the desert, and black tar rising up through the ground.

One evening, two strangers walked up to the gate of Sodom. A man named Lot took them into his house. That night the men of the city surrounded it, and before dawn Lot went out into the dark to warn the young men who were to marry his daughters. They thought he was joking.

At first light, the strangers took Lot, his wife and his two daughters by the hand and led them out of the city. Run, they said. Do not look back. Do not stop anywhere in the plain. The sun had risen when Lot reached the little town of Zoar. Then fire and brimstone fell on Sodom and Gomorrah, and in a single morning the cities of the plain stopped existing. Behind him, his wife looked back.

But the most unsettling thing about Sodom is not the fire. It is what the valley is doing now. Genesis says that the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled across the vale of Siddim and fell into its pits. In 2001, a geologist from Kibbutz Ein Gedi named Eli Raz argued that the verse described the ground itself collapsing, and he warned that the holes opening along the shrinking Dead Sea would swallow people. In October 2003 he fell into one, and spent between twelve and fourteen hours at the bottom. Today there are more than six thousand of them.

In this documentary you will understand why the Dead Sea valley is a crack between two plates of the Earth's crust that have slid some 105 kilometres past each other, how the Bronze Age town of Bab edh-Dhra built a wall seven metres thick in sections that may have been meant to survive earthquakes, what ancient writers meant when they said the lake announced its tar twenty days in advance by blackening silver, how two geological reconstructions explain fire and brimstone as an earthquake, liquefied ground and burning bitumen, why a famous 2021 study claiming that a cosmic airburst destroyed a city identified with Sodom was retracted in 2025, how the pillar of salt known as Lot's wife was made by an earthquake within the last four thousand years, and why the pits of Genesis are opening again.
