What Was Hidden Beneath the Yellowed Varnish? What Did I Find Under the Layer of Soot?

May 1, 2026 — MOSCOW
Welcome to my studio! Today, on the restoration table, we have an amazing witness to history: a painting that turned exactly 140 years old this year. 🖼️
In this video, I will show you the process of rescuing a work by the outstanding Italian genre painter Herménégilde Danti (1851–1899). The painting dates back to 1884, a period when the artist’s talent was in full bloom.
About the artist:
H. Danti became famous for his genre scenes, which were rendered with exquisite, jewel-like detail. He was a genius of light and texture. Look at how masterfully he captured the atmosphere of a conversation between a monk and a layman: we can practically feel the warmth of the hearth and smell the aged wine. Yet, over a century and a half, time has left its mark on this masterpiece...
What was done:
The painting arrived in poor condition: the varnish had oxidized and turned into a dense, "tea-colored" veil that had "devoured" the painting's depth and the artist's original color palette. 🌫️☕️
In this episode, you will see:
How chemical tests are performed on an authentic 19th-century painting.
The moment the artist's original layer is "revealed": as the old varnish gives way to the true light.
The cleaning of minute details: the characters' faces, the texture of their clothing, and interior elements.
The result of my many hours of work—restoring the painting to its pristine appearance.
Restoration is not merely cleaning; it is a dialogue with the master across the centuries. And today, together, we will give Herménégilde Danti his voice back. ✨🖌️
