The real reason the Devils lost 5-3 tonight Trends trends that have continued in from last season with a unique plan to fix it What was also unique tonight the newcomers? Yeah, they looked good Welcome in to Devils Digest appreciate you guys being here today If you haven't already and you enjoy the content, please go ahead hit the subscribe button It helps the channel out a ton and we always appreciate it Now, New Jersey had never lost to Utah before until tonight 5-3 mammoth over the Devils Devils have now given up 11 goals in the last two games So coming into this year, you know things were gonna be different I mean you had new roster players a new general manager and One of the things that really felt different was the way that they won about their goaltending I mean just a year ago. They re-signed Jacob Markstrom Jacob Markstrom's gone completely new situation in that and this year You know, they're doing something that I don't think we've ever seen New Jersey do in the past spending 3.75 on your goaltending Jake Allen 36 years old hasn't played over 40 games More than one time since he won the Stanley Cup back in 2019 Niko Dawes, he's never played 40 games in a season. Remy Poirier. Um Waver wire transaction. So you thought about this goaltending? You're like, well, how is this gonna work? You know Sonny man has talked about it before, you know He values the models with showing that it's tougher to predict how a goaltender is gonna wind up and maybe that's why you move off a guy like Jacob Markstrom who Didn't have a very good year last year and you kind of go a little bit less in terms of term with these other guys It's not you're not stapled into it. So when this goaltending situation came out, you know It seems low risk in terms of dollar amount term Long-term future, you know, you don't feel that with this goaltending group. Now the issue would be is When you've allowed 11 goals in your last two games there were three games in the season five goals six goals two times so far So what would be the reason of you know, why this might work? Well, we know what sports it Okay teams copy each other team see a team win four to one Tom Petrone says let's go get a little bit tougher You know last year Carolina how Carolina won they didn't spend much of their goaltending What I'm not saying is Sonny Mehta hasn't done, you know, he's on research Hey, you know likes the models of the East Seas with you know, maybe we shouldn't value giving a goaltender a long-term contract. I Just want to take you guys through it a little bit more because when we compare this To Carolina and say oh, you know Carolina won a Stanley Cup last year with Brandon Bussey Not even an age-old goaltender last year Frederick Anderson is also just as old as Jake Allen You know, why couldn't it be us? Well, let's go take a deeper look at Carolina when we think Carolina Last year Carolina finished top five and expected goals again last year Carolina didn't let up a lot of chances and When you can do something like that When you gonna be top five and expected goals against well, I mean you can get away with a lot more You can get away with your team Not even a 900 save percentage by any of your three goals by using two goalies in the Stanley Cup playoffs in the Stanley Cup final Those are the type of things that you can get away with. I mean you saw the other team there was just The Vegas Golden Knights the runner-up for the Stanley Cup So these teams are built like that. Don't let up a lot of chances keep chances minimal Goaltending, you know, we'll use a few we'll be fine. We're good in these areas. It could work now How would that bode for the devil because if you want to do this formula and you want to make this work? Well, you can't be throwing up numbers like this This is from tonight's game how the defensive pairings played tonight. And the only one that played reasonably well Was a huge pass you want one? Hamilton seeing in dollar not a good night whatsoever Dylan Chisholm not a good night whatsoever. I mean, it looks a little bit better Chisholm had a 21 horsey tonight Dylan a little bit of a problem in that goal So when you look at this defensive core and you compare it to the type of chances that you know A team like Carolina a team like Vegas is giving up They don't need great goaltending They can get away with it. They can find other ways to win. They can give up their chances and The goaltending might not be there as much to stop them, but they limit them It's not all the time with New Jersey so far tonight Look pretty bad last year a lot of chances given up goaltending Question mark, I mean that's like to put it around this Jake Allen's and played over 40 games one time one time since 2019 he's played over 40 games Nikko Dawes has never played 40 games in a season And we saw what management did with him last year. They gave Jake Allen a new contract Nikko Dawes We know if Tom Petro is still here. I don't think Nikko Dawes is probably playing right now and he's getting a little bit of a sample size and Six goals went in Not all his fault and kind of the same thing with Jake Allen tonight wasn't all his fault. No defense didn't look good But this is what we have So something would have to change here because right now the devil's defense Doesn't look very good defensively. And when you look at it around the league, these are the top five in terms of goaltending spent least amount New Jersey's number two Carolina they're number three Carolina's numbers show that Maybe they can be number three So that's where I go with that in terms of this goaltending and defensive group something needs to change because five goals six goals It's just not good enough it's not gonna win in this league Especially when you think about in Jersey should I had a fourth goal tonight? I mean, I don't know Intent to blow the whistle. I don't know exactly how that works. I Guess it was an intent to call a play done. But uh on from that though. I mean look here's one thing That I would say Very happy about tonight Sheldon Keefe putting grits yak on the first line. Look I can applaud Sheldon Keefe for that Because Anthony Manta clearly not working. Um Move off of it early grits yak offensive skill super talented super dynamic. He's you in the top six It shouldn't be a question. That's a player in your top six going forward. I'd love to see this work again next game I think they would play 346 of ice time tonight together in the third period five on five This is something like to see going forward and I think you're in it much better result because we are gonna love a lot of goals Go score some and if you know me, you know, I value offense more than I value defense Can you have a defense where you know, you're throwing up numbers like that with? Goal tending that you're spending, you know three million dollars on Probably not but could you be in a position where? You get the most out of your offense Make it something to switch whether a defense and goal tending. I think that works, but That was good. And then the newcomers tonight. I mean focus got a goal Evangelista two goals tonight for New Jersey you know the newcomers in terms of Evangelista Focus scoring tonight. I mean Evangelista looks like he fits right in with this group Anthony Manta, you know has it maybe can't give up the speed of guys like Jackie's just for brat might not be a great fit He scored 33 last year. You put him on the third line. I mean contract works if he is just a third line player I don't use any Necessarily, you know, you're angry with it or anything along those lines, you know, we're three games in the season Do I think he's beneficial in your first line with Jackie's and just a brat probably not Our setting grid check is so not a big problem there if Anthony Manta wants to being on your third line wing And you put our good suck on your first line wing. There's no issue there focus and both Evangelista getting two goals tonight Could have had a hat trick right before that goal that got waved off hit the post So I could add a trick tonight two goals. He's fitting great look Evangelista exactly what we hope for he's been great so far should have you know another 60 I have around a 60-point season again And that's great value from Sonny Meta So I mean all in all what I've gotten out of this season, you know so far You know game one looked really good really strong offensively game two There were some issues Defense didn't look great game three defense did not look great at all tonight. And when you're going to have it like that And you're gonna use a whole entire well, you know Carolina won a Stanley Cup last year with Brandon Bussey Frederick Anderson Peter could check off at times The defense has to look like how Carolina's does Carolina doesn't give up a ton of chances. They also create a ton That's the part where The Devils do you have a chance? to sort of Get away with this to an extent is that their offense so far this year in terms of creating chances They've been very good. So that's where you're looking to Go attending. It's gonna continue to be a story. I knew it was gonna be a story I think I'm sure you did too right from game one. It was questionable Whether you liked it whether you felt strongly whether you didn't feel strongly whether you just wanted to see what was gonna happen Go attending. That's gonna be a question mark. That's gonna be a story all year long Connor Holbrook hasn't been treated yet either. So they'll be connected them through rumors throughout the year But I'm gonna know you think down the comments. It is just three games in the year, you know The thing that concerns me more Than a six five five three loss are the trends that we're seeing We saw the defense give a lot of chances last year this year seems a little more of it Positive trend though offense looks much better.
