Nobel Prize Winning Physicist Francis Halzen: How Neutrinos Found A Monster!

In almost every branch of astronomy, the Milky Way gets in the way first.
IceCube saw something stranger.
In this conversation, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Francis Halzen walks through the neutrino sky: the 2017 identification of TXS 0506+056, the 88 neutrinos pointing toward the active galaxy NGC 1068, and the 4.2 sigma result that emerged from a blind analysis.
The twist is that some of the most interesting neutrino sources are comparatively dark in gamma rays. That is why Halzen calls this “multi-messenger astronomy Plan B.”
This episode was recorded in 2022. A year later, IceCube reported evidence for high-energy neutrino emission from the plane of the Milky Way in Science, adding another piece to a sky that had already turned out to be far less intuitive than expected.
