Campanas del Alba by Eduardo Sainz de la Maza (1903-1982)
---------------------------------------
“My father introduced me to this piece when I was a teenager. He gave me the score, and I was immediately captivated by its beautiful atmosphere and harmony. I remember memorizing it very quickly because I loved the piece so much.”
— Kanahi Yamashita
Eduardo Sáinz de la Maza’s Campanas del Alba (“Bells of Dawn”) evokes the peaceful atmosphere of a Spanish town awakening at sunrise. Dedicated to his older brother, the celebrated guitarist Regino Sáinz de la Maza, the piece combines natural harmonics that imitate distant church bells with a flowing tremolo melody reminiscent of Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra. Its impressionistic harmonies and contrasting textures create a dreamlike musical landscape, capturing the stillness and beauty of the early morning.
