Karahan Tepe's Newest Discovery Has Archaeologists Terrified — Here's Why)

In August 2026 archaeologists at Karahan Tepe lifted a few flat stones off a bench inside a small round room and found a carved figure sitting underneath, about knee high, a human seated on the back of a leopard. Somebody placed it there eleven thousand years ago and covered it over, and nobody had touched it since. That is seven thousand years before the Great Pyramid. In this one I go through why that one statue caused such a stir, because at this site the leopard is always the one on top. There is an older carving of a human with a leopard riding on their back, and a bench at nearby Sayburç showing a man between two leopards with their jaws wide open. This new one flips the whole arrangement round. But what I actually could not stop thinking about is the burying. Every single special building at Karahan Tepe was deliberately filled in, layer by layer, large stones set carefully over the pillars at the back, and before they filled them the people smashed the statues inside. There is a seven and a half foot seated figure in there with every rib cut individually into the stone and a vulture placed beside him, and he was found in pieces and had to be put back together. They did not abandon these rooms. They closed them, like a funeral for a building. And the rest of what the ground has given up in the last two seasons has wrecked nearly every assumption people had. It was supposed to be a temple nobody lived at, and they have now found over thirty houses with hearths and grinding stones. The pillars were supposed to be faceless, and one turned up in somebody's home with deep set eyes and a sharp jaw. They expected grain in the diet and got legumes and gazelle. There is even a stone vessel holding a smaller vessel holding three tiny animals, a fox, a vulture and a boar, each head pushed through its own little ring, which the excavation director calls the earliest three dimensional storytelling ever found. And right now there is one small room in a hall up there capped with heavy stone slabs with no way in except from above.
