Cycling Begins the Minute You Add Water
Discover how misunderstood the concept of cycling your fish tank really is. In this video, Father Fish explains why your aquarium starts cycling the moment you add water and why the traditional idea of waiting weeks before adding fish is often misunderstood. He shares how a planted aquarium, deep substrate, beneficial bacteria, and balanced stocking work together to create a healthy, stable ecosystem.
Learn why adding fish gradually, using live plants, maintaining biodiversity, and supporting natural biofiltration are the real keys to long-term aquarium success. Father Fish discusses fish-in cycling, natural aquarium methods, low-tech planted tanks, aquarium startup mistakes, and how the nitrogen cycle actually works inside a living ecosystem rather than a sterile tank. His method focuses on deep sand beds, mulm, detritus, microbial life, and ecosystem balance rather than relying only on bottled bacteria or constant water testing.
This video covers aquarium cycling, nitrogen cycle, fish tank cycling myth, planted tank setup, freshwater aquarium care, beneficial bacteria, aquarium substrate, deep sand bed, fish tank startup, natural fishkeeping, aquarium ecosystem, bioactive aquarium, live plants, community tank balance, fish tank stability, low maintenance aquarium, beginner aquarium tips, biological filtration, mature aquarium, and sustainable fishkeeping.

Lou Foxwell adopted the role of Father Fish many years ago when he opened a tropical fish store as a retirement business. Prior to this, he served as a missionary for 25 years, following in his father's footsteps by ministering to a congregation of deaf worshipers.
Lou fondly recalls his grandmother from Berlin, Germany, who inspired his love for fish keeping as a child. As a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, Lou played a significant role in its development, serving as chair of the Community Relations Committee and participating in hiring the first Director of the Aquarium.
With experience across nearly every level of the fish industry, Father Fish offers a wealth of knowledge and products, including plants, soil supplements, and more, to enhance your aquarium experience.
