Hurricane Polo Just Became One of the STRONGEST STORMS EVER — EL NIÑO Is Fueling It

Hurricane Polo went from a 50 mph tropical storm to a 160 mph Category 5 hurricane in less than 24 hours — one of the most extreme rapid intensification events ever observed.

At its peak, Polo reached 180 mph winds and a central pressure of just 892 millibars, making it the second-most intense eastern Pacific hurricane ever recorded by pressure, behind only Hurricane Patricia.

But what allowed Polo to strengthen so explosively?

In this video, we investigate the extraordinary ocean conditions beneath the storm, including water approaching 90°F, unusually deep reservoirs of warm water, weak wind shear, and an exceptionally powerful El Niño reshaping the Pacific.

We also compare Polo with Hurricane Patricia and Hurricane Otis, examine its impact on Baja California Sur, and look at what scientists are learning about the role of extreme ocean heat and long-term climate change in today's strongest hurricanes.

Could the Pacific produce another storm like Polo before this El Niño ends?
