Eannatum was one of the most powerful rulers of early Sumer, reigning over the city-state of Lagash during the third millennium BCE. At a time when southern Mesopotamia was divided among competing city-states, Eannatum expanded the influence of Lagash through a series of military campaigns and political victories. He is particularly famous for his conflict with the neighboring city of Umma over control of fertile agricultural land, a struggle recorded in some of the earliest surviving accounts of organized warfare. His victories were immortalized on the remarkable Stele of the Vultures, which depicts soldiers advancing in formation under their king and remains one of the most important monuments from early Mesopotamian history.
