Lugalzagesi was one of the most ambitious rulers of ancient Sumer and a central figure in the dramatic political struggles that preceded the rise of the Akkadian Empire. Originally ruler of Umma in southern Mesopotamia during the 24th century BCE, he expanded his power through warfare and brought several important Sumerian cities under his authority, including Lagash and Uruk. His victories temporarily created a level of political domination rarely achieved among the fiercely independent city-states of early Mesopotamia. In his inscriptions, Lugalzagesi presented his rule as divinely favored and described an extraordinarily broad sphere of authority, reflecting the scale of his royal ambitions.
