Al-Jazari: The Engineering Genius Who Was Centuries Ahead of His Time

Al-Jazari was one of the most remarkable engineers and inventors of the medieval world. Working in the late 12th and early 13th centuries in Upper Mesopotamia, he served the Artuqid rulers and devoted much of his career to designing sophisticated mechanical devices. His famous work, The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices, completed in 1206, described dozens of machines through detailed explanations and illustrations. His creations included elaborate water clocks, automated fountains, water-raising machines, musical automata, mechanical servants, and ingenious devices designed to control the movement and flow of water.
