Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe video chronicles the transformation of \"Fernie's\" from a pop-up plant business into a permanent retail shop at the Magnolia Silos. It highlights the collaborative design process, the integration of a \"desert meets mid-century\" aesthetic, and the owner's vision of creating a community space centered on healing, peace, and inspiration.
Okay, Mikey. Okay. It's funny how big it feels in here now that everything's gone. I forgot what it looked like. That's crazy.
So I wanted to bring Mikey here today. We're trying to figure out what we want Bernie's to be as a real
freestanding business here at the silos.
So I just want to hear any vision you've got for this space so I can start
taking that in.
There's so two sections. One being like a living room filling like a little space for someone to plop down.
Just kind of relax. Mm-hmm. And then a plant bar.
So what does that mean?
Like where people are potting themselves or you're potting for them?
I could pot there or you go up and you order your plant instead of a drink.
Oh, a plant bar. Plant bar. Like the checkout. And then you'd have plants like hanging, but it feels like this
bar. It's a plant bar.
Got it. Yes.
One thing that I love is your interaction with the guests when they're like, hey, can you change this pot out?
Are you wanting to do that in the space? Yeah, perfect.
After the success of Silobration and how every single time she showed up, Bernie's sold out. People loved what she was
offering and so I said, well, we could take this to the next level. Are you interested in doing like a freestanding shop?
We want Fernie's here at Magnolia.
I was in complete shock. I think it took a while actually for it to
register what you'd asked, but.
So we've cleared out one of the cottages here at the Silo's just because I think the story of Fernie's is really to me the
the whole point of what we're doing down there,
which is this idea of the strolling. People walking around in and out feeling inspired to say, hey,
I want to take this houseplant home and nurture it, to I want to go nurture my dream because I just saw Mikey live
that out. I could kind of see that we could do that. So hopefully,
hopefully this ends well.
So what is your vision for the first thing people see?
Plant bar, which I love. What about the back?
Like a fun tile. And you're saying you want something suspended from the ceiling for plants. I love your dreams.
I know you want to use some vintage pieces. How much vintage do you want in here? Marvin's gonna be doing all the
cabinetry. He can use the right style so it feels like mid-century,
but it's new and a little more functional for what we need the space to be. Okay. I love those old wall units.
They have shelving and like a little desk. Oh, yes. You know, they took up like a whole wall in someone's house.
What if we take that concept of that mid-century wall unit and build it out here?
Yeah. And then this could be your little living room setting. Are you thinking a sofa and two chairs? Coffee table? We can play with that.
Okay.
If you were to give me three words you want people to feel
when they walk into this space, what are those three words?
Happy. Okay. Peace. Okay. Peace and
inspired. Got it. Happy, peaceful, and inspired. I love that.
I think your heart just to create these
experiences for your customers and just seeing you do it well has taught me, what do I want for people?
So what you need to do is find a sofa, the chairs, any rugs, anything that you just love. We'll start doing the design, get back
together.
We need to get this thing demoed, ordered, and then we're gonna put this back together really quick.
It's gonna be the cutest little shop. It's gonna be so magical.
We are here today in the design room. Look behind me, all the colors.
We have got Mikey here. Say hi, Mikey.
And Kristen has helped model up this situation on the wall, and we've been working on it.
We just presented it to Mikey today. So I'm gonna show you the design real quick.
You walk in the shop. This is the plant bar, and then this is the main wall.
So she's gonna have a little sitting area. She really wanted that, this cute floaty
situation, and then this whole wall where she'll display all of her vintage
found pieces with plants.
So a few modifications we're working off of. We're changing this back wall, changing the color tile.
I'm gonna show you what we're changing it to. This is what we ended up with.
We're doing this terracotta breeze block on the wall. Lots of texture.
She picked that cutie green, very 70s.
Kristen's just gonna plug all these back into that, and we have to order everything by the end of this week.
I think where we landed is gonna be so cool.
You can never pass up a good vintage mom mug.
I'm in Denton, Texas, and my girls are dancing at a convention, a dance convention, and I'm
Fernie's
shop shopping.
I'm hoping to find vintage furniture piece that really will fit with the whole aesthetic of the store, and I stumbled upon
the neatest mid-century furniture shop that has
some really cool pots
for planting. I'm gonna snag this orange one over here.
There's also this really neat wall piece.
Really good stuff.
Planters.
Cutie.
Squirrel for Jojo.
I figure I need about 400 potted plants for opening day, and this is a good start.
I told the guy I want to do that founders
wall unit for the shop, so I'm gonna get that. So he's gonna fix it up and make it look all pretty.
So what a good day!
Okay, so I snuck into the design room at Magnolia.
I'm down here because I started having
second guesses.
Is it second guesses?
Oh, second thoughts. I started having second thoughts about the tile I picked,
looking at some other options.
Yeah, I picked the green tile initially, and then I just at night, I'm like, oh, is that gonna be too much?
So I'd have to start again from square one.
Okay, Mikey, so we've got the wall.
We're thinking we wanted to see what real plants look like,
and what we decided is the one that we picked is like too much green.
So that goes away.
She keeps coming back to this blue, because of that stripe on Fernie's camper trailer.
With this green-blue couch right here, and bring in the gold bars.
See, it's all the brass,
the green. I think we finalized the design.
Sorry, Joe and the team. That's it. Final decision.
After reworking the design and finalizing all the materials, we've started on the construction of Fernie's.
So far, painting and lighting are done. The wood beams on the ceiling have been installed,
and now
Marvin is getting a good start on the paint bar.
But Mikey and I still have some decisions to make regarding the brass fixtures.
Hey, John. Hey, Morgan. Hey, Joe. Are you all ready for us? Sure.
So today we are meeting with John and Morgan at Nickel Metal Smith.
We are finalizing all of the brass details for Fernie's.
Morgan, the designs have changed a little bit. I feel like I've looked at three different renderings.
So we're going to have a brass clothing rack, the footrail, the footrail at the bar,
and then the hanging shelf with the plants coming down.
And today she's gonna get to pick the finish so they can start making all the fun details.
This would be the darkened brass. This is a polished brass.
And then this is just like a pretty
natural orbital finish. Actually just got all the material in today.
Do you want us to look in the box first? Sure. Let's look. I can't even imagine.
So this is our one-inch brass tubing, which will be the vertical rails. Oh my goodness, pretty. The rectangle bar.
I love it. It is really pretty.
What I love about what Mikey has picked from a design standpoint, it's that
juxtaposition of like everything that's like natural and
then you've got that shine of the brass that kind of makes everything come alive.
And I think when people walk in, they're not gonna be able to pick apart what she's created,
but they're gonna be able to say it just works. It's amazing how
beautiful it is. Just raw. Just original.
But if there's any scratches just from shipment, can't do anything about that.
You'd have to kind of, yeah, I like that. Kind of antique. Yeah, it looks a little vintage.
Yeah, is is it too risky to leave this as is?
One way to keep that a little bit would be to clean it really well
and then we do a light clear coat on it. Okay, so it stays like this longer.
I kind of wanted more of a shiny, but then when you see the
the brass in its original form, it's a little beat up and it, you know, has the patina. The patina?
Oh, patina.
It has the patina and
it's just, it's not perfect and I liked that element of brass.
I'm excited to make it happen.
Yeah, this is gonna be the coolest shop.
You've got to get started on planting, on
pricing, on curating. So I'm gonna take over where I love to take over, get that design and construction finished.
I'm fine with that. I'm good with that. Okay. Are you a little sad? You know what I like. I know what you like.
I'll take some pictures if I'm nervous. Desert meets mid-century. Desert meets mid-century.
I got you. Yeah, you got it. You got it. I got it. Okay.
I'm really wanting to reveal to her, her designs
before we put all the product and stuff into it.
So it's like, Mikey, you don't even think about the shop. Figure out your inventory, get all that situated and then as soon as it's
done, she's gonna step in and go, can't wait. She made the right decision. She's gonna know she made the right decisions.
You sure you want to do this? I'm not sure yet, but I will be.
Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research.
Doing some, a lot of YouTube videos.
Sweet good ol' David.
He volunteered to build me a little shed
because I just got pots all over the place and I've been going antique shopping.
So I've got a lot more in boxes and my workspace is just tight. With the store being open six days a week,
I'm gonna have to be potting probably like every day.
So to have a designated area to do that in is very important.
We just got back to Mikey's house and I think they did a lot more today.
You doctors know how to do construction.
Okay, David and Andrew are
still working.
Love it. It's looking so good. I can't wait to move all my pots in.
And start potting.
The end.
T-shirts today? Yes.
Fernie's is somewhat of an experiment. We have no idea how this is gonna play out.
We know how her pop-ups play out, which is she shows up, she sells out. This is a different situation and so we're
anticipating that a lot of her plants will sell out.
But what will help cover that are some of the other inventory people may want to grab and go.
T-shirts, like what designs do you want? What sayings do you want? When we did, girls just want to have ferns.
Plants are my soil mates.
What do you fly for a cacti? What kind of products do you want on the shelves? Coffee mugs. She's the curator.
I feel good about doing something like this with that 70s feel like the colors like you did.
It's been so fun to come up with different product ideas and pitch those
to the team and then they took that and made it happen.
What do you think about the darker font?
That flows better. So I kind of started off with some like pencil sketches. Is this for a sticker pack?
I would love to do five for a sticker pack. So one, two, three, four.
Maybe even switching that out with this.
I've seen her really do product design over the years in a really subtle way.
She made this, she made plant lady, we bought all the shirts, garden mama, I like hand-dyed the shirts.
People who love plants are gonna get it. So she did this on a t-shirt.
I'll just show you the one that she was making. Okay, it's just the fuzzy letters.
And look, in seven years when the Yellow Submarine opens, you can buy them for you and your plant-loving friends.
In seven years? 2016, what's the math? Four, five, six.
In seven years, she was gonna call it the Yellow Submarine, she changed it to Fernie's,
opens, you can buy them for you and all your plant-loving friends.
You beat your dreams by a year.
I love that you predicted that. Who would have known?
Do you feel really good about t-shirts, stickers, sweaters, coffee mugs, like most of the branded stuff we could get by opening?
Absolutely. I like that answer. Guarantee.
When I see the board and all the images and ideas that they've helped create, I get really excited for,
you know, opening day when customers also just get to see the fun and the beauty. Thank you, ladies.
This is so fun. Thank you so much.
Are you helping daddy build his shelves, Juniper?
She's totally helping.
We just got done eating dinner, and I look outside to the cutest little sight. All those babies are helping David paint.
We are close to being done.
The shed is finally complete.
It's been stained. David put all the shelves in. I moved all my pots in there and
have everything set up for potting day.
Joe's really helping me with the product and the shop, so I know I need to start moving my little feet.
Do you want to pot something?
It's important to me that I'm in charge of the plants.
I think I am picky, like not any vintage
vessel will do, and I feel like certain plants go in a certain pot.
I don't know how to explain that, but I love that part of it.
You brushing it off? Your dirt's about to fall out.
Recently, I've just been focusing on other parts of the shop and merchandise and design, which has been so fun.
But plants are the heart of Fernie's and just the healing that they bring, so I'm excited to be back making these tiny
happy things.
I'm here at the silos, and every time I'm here, I try to check in on Fernie's.
This is a dream.
Keeping this from Mikey, she keeps asking for pictures, and I'm like, I'm not sending you pictures,
because I want her to be completely surprised. The last time she saw this was basically in the 3D
sketchup, and so I told her I'll take it from there and just make sure everything gets
installed, but this is one thing that Mikey found at a
mid-century modern furniture shop, so this is vintage.
So Marvin, who makes all of our cabinetry here, made sure that this would match this.
So it all balances out. You've got vintage, you've got new, but it still ties in all together.
But the star of the show, this island
with this brass
bar that they rounded for her, this tile, it looks so pretty, and then this, this breeze block.
I could not wait to see this up, and I think this looks amazing. I mean, again, it's that organic,
raw, natural material that'll just pair so well with all of her plants.
Mikey is not going to believe it.
In the last two weeks, this has really come together.
We've got two weeks left. We've got to finish up the breeze block on the wall, get her neon sign installed, the terrazzo countertops,
floating shelf, so we're talking three or four more line items, and it's time to move in.
Hey guys, the merch is here. Let me show you some of the things, like this little hat,
little stickers.
Can you see those?
Really cool blankets, and all of these tees. It's like a real-life shop, and it's happening.
We got plants in our laps, and plants on top of plants, Mikey. That's a miracle that this all fit.
We made it, just got back. The part is now the unloading.
Found some beautiful plants today,
birds of paradise,
airplane plants, little Hoya hearts. So I think you're ready to go. I'm ready. I got a lot of work to do.
We are days away from opening, and while Mikey is busy potting plants, the team is finalizing all the details of the store.
Once everything is in place, Mikey can get her store stocked up and ready for customers. I can't wait for her to see it.
Okay, Mikey, listen. So what you're gonna see right now is the construction totally done. No product is in here.
This is kind of now, this is your creation, and it's a blank canvas for all your plants and products.
Like, it's all yours.
I'm so excited. I don't want to cry.
It's okay if you cry.
Oh, it's so cute.
You gotta walk in.
Oh my goodness.
Oh my gosh, I love it.
Isn't it so cute?
So, is this what you imagined?
It's better.
Are you just saying that?
I promise I love it so much.
Mikey, this piece that you found is so amazing.
Like, this was really the inspiration for that piece, so I think it really helps bring balance.
But I love that this is an original vintage find from you.
What do you think about the wall?
I love the wall.
I love the sign.
I love it all.
Knowing that you wanted this to be green, and now it's blue. Looking at it, are you so glad it's blue?
I'm so glad it's blue.
This was your brainchild?
I love it.
Seeing this in real life, I'm like, this is amazing, Mikey.
It's so pretty. They did so good.
That plant bar, I love that.
I feel like it's going to be, every time we close the shop at night, the plants are going to party.
It's like, lucky plants.
This is a fun day.
It's so fun, I can't believe it.
Let's go out there, let's go grab all your product.
So now the plan is, we're going to start merchandising.
I think this is the best part of owning a shop, is getting to tell that full story.
And show everyone how everything comes together.
It's not just plants and these vintage vessels.
It's also the t-shirts Mikey designed.
The books she's curated.
The candles, all the things.
Mikey, you have a Fernies patch.
Chip's going to want one for his backpack.
I'm going to steal a few things today.
You can steal whatever you want.
It looks so good.
I want to live here.
This is your store.
She's so cute.
You and Fernies.
I'm going to be your first customer.
Oh my goodness, everything is so cute.
This is hard.
Do you take cash, check or card?
I'll take it all.
You said you want people to feel happy, peaceful and inspired.
Yes.
I think you're going to inspire people to want to take care of something.
To watch it grow.
Thanks Jo, I hope so.
Okay Mikey.
You're open tomorrow.
I think we should go celebrate.
I'm just thankful.
What else is there to be?
Here we go.
It's open.
When I think back to the beginning of the journey.
Her first yes to the pop-up shop.
With our friends at Black Oak.
Then to the success of Cylabration.
To see how her life has evolved.
It's been really amazing.
Even though I am an introvert.
I do love connecting with people.
Cat people, dog people, plant people.
We have this connection.
If you're not a plant person yet.
Then I want to offer you a plant.
Because it can bring so much joy and healing to your soul.
Do you know how to take care of cactus?
Yes.
Do you have a little plant collection?
Yes.
Look out world.
Fernie's is not just going to be this little camper trailer on wheels.
I think it's going to be something so much bigger.
And it's just beautiful.
Because at the end of the day.
I know what her heart is for people.
And her heart for plants.
And her heart for connection and community.
And it's just a beautiful story.
This is where it's going to get fun.
Because Mikey has laugh attacks.
I can't do this without laughing.
I'm so sorry.
Just give me like 30 seconds.
When do you need these shirts by?
How soon do you need it?
