Rey grew up in a humble family and began his wrestling journey at an incredibly young age. Trained in the Mexican tradition of lucha libre and inspired by his wrestling family, he eventually rose through WCW and WWE, winning the 2006 Royal Rumble, multiple world championships, and earning induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.

Behind the mask was always a strong connection to family. Rey’s father, Roberto Gutiérrez, was born in 1948 and passed away in November 2024. In his tribute, Rey remembered him as an example of a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose influence shaped much of the man he became.
