The Dead Sea Scrolls Changed the Bible — Here’s What They Actually Reveal

The Archaeology Mystery

The Dead Sea Scrolls are often described as one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century. But what did they actually reveal about the Bible?

Hidden for nearly two thousand years in caves near the Dead Sea, these ancient manuscripts allowed scholars to compare biblical texts from more than a thousand years before the complete medieval Hebrew manuscripts that had long served as our primary witnesses.

The results were remarkable — and far more complicated than either side of the debate often suggests.

The Great Isaiah Scroll revealed extraordinary continuity across centuries of copying, while manuscripts of Jeremiah showed that different Hebrew editions of the same biblical book once circulated side by side. Fragments of Samuel preserved passages absent from the later Masoretic tradition, and a Qumran copy of Deuteronomy preserved the famous “sons of God” reading in Deuteronomy
