George Dunlop Leslie’s Endearing Paintings of English Domestic Life
George Dunlop Leslie (1835 – 1921) was an English painter, illustrator and author. He came from an artistic family, with his father Charles being a genre painter, his uncle Robert being a marine artist, and his sister Mary also picking up the trade. After studying at Cary’s Art Academy, George quickly started displaying his work in the Royal Academy, where he would become an associate and eventually a Royal Academician. Although he started out painting in the pre-Raphaelite style, George switched to portraying “the sunny side of English domestic life” and was praised for showing the “sweet quality of English girlhood”. Although his figures are not ecstatic with joy, the scenes show a simple and beautiful quality of life for which many of us today could only wish.
