HM Submarine Tribune 1942 - Jack Bryson.

In 1942, Ministry of Information photographer Jack Bryson was granted access aboard HM Submarine Tribune, a Royal Navy T class submarine built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow in Furness and commissioned in October 1939. Designed for long range patrols, the T class formed the backbone of Britain's submarine fleet during the Second World War, carrying ten torpedo tubes and a crew of around sixty men. Tribune served in the North Sea and later the Mediterranean, undertaking patrols, reconnaissance missions, convoy interception, and training duties. Bryson's photographs were produced as part of the Ministry of Information's programme to document Britain's armed forces, providing the public with a rare view inside one of the Royal Navy's most secretive fighting vessels.

The photographs record the operational environment below deck, showing crew members working in the control room, torpedo compartments, engine spaces, and cramped living quarters where sailors lived for weeks at a time while on patrol. Every part of the submarine was designed to maximise limited space, with bunks, machinery, weapons, and supplies occupying almost every available area. Rather than illustrating combat itself, Bryson's series documents the technical organisation, working routines, and daily life aboard a wartime submarine, creating one of the most detailed photographic records of service inside a Royal Navy T class boat during the Second World War.
