I Spent a Cold Night in Jotunheimen for This Sunrise

I spent a cold night camping in Jotunheimen, Norway, waiting for the right conditions to photograph the sunrise.

After waiting for better weather all summer, I finally saw a small window of opportunity and drove nearly 300 km into the mountains to Leirvassbu. Even though it was early August, temperatures dropped to around 2°C during the night, with fresh snow covering the surrounding peaks.

The weather was far from predictable. Clouds, fog and a beautiful inversion surrounded Kyrkja as the first light arrived, creating the kind of moody conditions I had been hoping for.

I spent the morning hiking, exploring different compositions and photographing the landscape with my Nikon Z6 III. And just when I thought the best conditions were over, the fog lifted and the mountains transformed again.

This is a cinematic Norwegian landscape photography adventure about wild camping, hiking, changing mountain weather and the search for the perfect photograph.
