I headed into Jotunheimen National Park in Norway for one last chance to experience and photograph the autumn colours before winter arrives.
After a work trip near the mountains, I couldn't resist driving further into Jotunheimen. The forecast wasn't promising, but I hoped to find golden autumn trees, turquoise rivers, dramatic mountain scenery and beautiful photographic compositions.
Along the way, I stopped at rivers, old wooden bridges and scenic viewpoints, using my camera to capture the colours and atmosphere of the Norwegian autumn. The weather gradually deteriorated, with heavy rain and low clouds moving into the mountains. But before heading home, I made one final stop at Gjendevatnet, where I managed to capture a few photographs during blue hour.
Not every photography trip goes according to plan, but sometimes the journey and the moments along the way make it worthwhile.

I've been staying close to Jotunheimen for a work trip, and when you're already
close to the mountains, it's hard to resist going a little further.
Jotunheimen is around 300 km from home for me, so I don't go there as often as I like.
The weather forecast for the afternoon wasn't looking very promising,
but I decided to make the most of the opportunity anyway. I headed further into the mountains,
hoping to find some beautiful autumn colors and interesting landscapes to photograph.
As I got further into Jotunheimen, landscape started to change,
and there was still some beautiful autumn colors to be found. I stopped along the road a few times,
using my 100 to 400 mm lens to pick out details in the landscape. The colorful foliage and even
some waterfalls in the distance were worth taking a close look at. Further into the mountains, the
low clouds were drifting around the peaks with the glaciers appearing through the mist.
Despite the uncertain weather, there were still plenty of interesting scenes to photograph.

At the next stop, I found the bridge crossing the river surrounded by beautiful autumn colors.
I wanted to capture the river with the golden trees framing the scene, but the light was
quite challenging with bright areas and deep shadows creating a lot of contrast. It took
some time to find a composition that worked and to balance all the different elements in the frame.
Further into the valley, I came across an old wooden bridge with the mountains rising in the
background. I had photographed the same spot in summer, but seeing it again in autumn made me
appreciate the difference. The green vegetation had turned into rich shades of golden orange,
and the wet leaves seemed to bring out the colors even more. I absolutely prefer the autumn version.
The colors add so much depth to the scene, and combined with the old wooden bridge
and the rugged mountains, it made a really beautiful setting for photography.
I continued further into the valley where I found another spot along the river that I
really wanted to photograph. The river, the autumn colors, and the mountains surrounding the valley
made this one of the most interesting locations on the trip. I spent quite a
bit of time here trying different compositions and looking for ways to capture the landscape.
By the time I reached my last location in Lærdal, the weather has taken a turn for the worse.
The rain was getting heavier and it was becoming
difficult to find the kind of conditions I hoped for.
I decided it was time to head home. Instead of driving back the same way,
I chose to cross Valdresflye hoping for a different perspective on the mountains
along the way. The weather wasn't exactly improving, but the drive back would give me
one more last chance [music] to experience the landscape before leaving the mountains behind.
The drive across the mountains was slow with heavy rain and poor visibility along the way.
As I approached Gjende the day [music] was coming to an end. I arrived just before
blue hour and despite the weather I decided to make one stop with the camera.
The light was fading quickly but I managed to capture a few photos before it got too dark.
Now it really was about time to head home. With the fog and rain still covering the roads,
I knew it was going to be a long drive. But looking back, I'm glad I made the trip. The
conditions weren't always what I hoped for, but I still found beautiful autumn scenes, spent a day
in the mountains, and came home with some photos I'm happy with. And sometimes, that's enough.
