Inside Elon Musk’s $119B TERAFAB — Nothing Like This Exists

Elon Musk is planning to pour $119 billion into a single facility called Terafab, a 100 million square foot megastructure designed to be the biggest factory in the world. With a production capacity of up to 1 million wafers per month, Terafab would make advanced chips for Tesla's Cybercab autonomous vehicle, the Optimus humanoid robot, SpaceX's Starlink satellites, and xAI's ever-growing AI models. The project aims to solve a massive chip bottleneck: Musk estimates the world's current AI chip manufacturing capacity meets only about 2% of what his companies will need. The factory would be nearly 10 times the size of Gigafactory Texas and about 50 times larger than the Pentagon, housing hundreds of school-bus-sized EUV lithography machines that each cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
At the center of Terafab sits a mysterious giant circle that Musk hinted could house a free electron laser, or FEL, potentially revolutionizing how extreme ultraviolet light is generated for chipmaking. Instead of firing lasers at molten tin drops like current EUV systems from companies like ASML, a free electron laser would accelerate electrons through an undulator magnet array to produce a tunable, clean EUV beam piped to multiple machines simultaneously. To keep the facility running around the clock, SpaceX is reportedly planning natural gas power plants paired with large battery storage to provide firm, reliable electricity independent of the Texas power grid. A former Intel leader with 17 years of experience in advanced chipmaking, including Intel's 18A work, is set to oversee the project, bringing critical knowledge of yield optimization and factory operations. Terafab represents a $119 billion bet that a single, fully integrated industrial city can transform the global semiconductor industry and power the future of AI, robotics, and self-driving technology.
