Mount Etna erupted in eastern Sicily, pushing a cloud of ash four kilometres into the sky and forcing the closure of airspace over Catania–Fontanarossa Airport. The shutdown halted flight operations at Italy's fifth busiest airport, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers as inbound flights were diverted across the island.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology raised the aviation alert to red following continuous ash emissions and weak strombolian activity at the Northeast Crater. With ash plumes and volcanic gas posing risks to jet engines, authorities suspended air traffic until conditions permit a safe reopening.
