Traditional African Dance | BAMAYA DANCE

Bamaya — a dance of gratitude and history.

Originating from Northern Ghana, Bamaya is a traditional Dagbamba dance performed by men dressed as women. It began during a deadly drought, when an oracle advised the people to dress like women and pray. The rains came — and the dance was born.

With fast footwork and waist twists, Bamaya mimics men dancing in the mud after the storm. It’s performed in groups, with drums, flutes, and singing filling the air.

Today, Bamaya is more than a dance. It’s a celebration, a story, and a proud symbol of Dagbon heritage.
