Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of Germany’s Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), accused NATO’s eastward expansion of contributing to tensions that led to Russia’s war in Ukraine and urged Germany to change course at the party’s final campaign rally before Berlin’s September 20 state election. Wagenknecht warned that a direct conflict with nuclear-armed Russia could ultimately involve missiles, criticised Germany’s increased defence spending and questioned Berlin’s attribution of an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, which Moscow has denied. BSW politician Fabio De Masi separately argued that higher weapons spending could come at the expense of pensions and social programmes. BSW is seeking to cross the five-percent threshold required to enter Berlin’s state parliament.
