Video Summary
AI GeneratedMadison LaFontaine from The Film Magic ranks ten of Martin Scorsese's films from worst to best. While she expresses deep respect for Scorsese's entire body of work, she evaluates the films based on a mix of personal preference and technical quality, ultimately crowning Goodfellas as the definitive masterpiece.
Hey guys, it's Madison LaFontaine from The Film Magic and I'm back for another video.
Before I get into it, don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more movie content.
So today we're going to be doing something that I am so excited about because I absolutely
love Martin Scorsese as a director and I pretty much love all 25 of his films.
So today I'm going to be ranking Martin Scorsese's films from 1 to 10, 10 being the worst, 1
being the best.
And FYI, even number 10 isn't even a bad film, it's just compared to all of his other work.
Obviously some of his work is better than others, but all in all I have so much respect
for Martin Scorsese as a director, he is absolutely phenomenal.
And this is kind of just a mixture of my opinion and kind of just a mixture of the facts.
So our number 10 spot goes to Casino.
Casino wasn't a bad movie, let me just be frank with that.
Casino was just Casino, you know what I mean?
You know, there's nothing special about it, Robert De Niro was great, but it's just nothing
stands out about the film and that's why I'm giving it the number 10 spot.
I'm not going to really elaborate much on it because, you know, it's just, it's pretty
self-explanatory, it's just Casino.
Good movie, but it's not a great movie.
Coming to our number 9 spot is Gangs of New York.
Again, I love this movie, this movie is great, I love Leonardo DiCaprio in this film, but
I just feel like it just isn't as great compared to some of his other films on the list.
So that's kind of why it's taking the number 9 spot.
To be completely honest, most of the films getting these kind of 10, 9, 8 type of spots
are just not as good as the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the top 5, top 6.
So I don't really have anything bad to say about the films closer to the beginning of
the list, but it's just not as great and it just wasn't my favorite Martin Scorsese film.
Number 8 on our list is The Irishman, Martin Scorsese's, I guess, newest film that released
in 2019?
Yes, it released in 2019.
Only complaint I have about this film, actually I have two complaints about this film.
I love the film, I think, I thought it was great, such, it's so nice to have just a classic
Martin Scorsese gangster film when we haven't had one in a while.
I loved it.
The only thing is, it is like 3 hours long, it is extremely long, and I just feel like
it wasn't exciting enough to be a 3 hour film.
Whereas if I could watch Wolf of Wall Street, yeah, I could sit there for 3 hours.
You know what I mean?
But Irishman, I had to kind of break it up, I think I watched like an hour and a half,
and an hour and a half, like I couldn't just watch 3 hours in one sitting.
Another thing I kind of thought missed the mark was the CGI they did with making the
actors older than they actually are and trying to make them younger.
I just feel like it was just, it looked off a little bit.
Maybe it's just because I know how old they are in real life, but to me it just kind of
looked off.
I feel like The Irishman would have been way higher on the list if it wasn't kind of for
those two factors that kind of just brought the film down for me personally.
The next film on our list is The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett.
I love this film.
It's a great film.
Again, I really had no complaints about the film itself.
It's just not one of my favorite Scorsese films.
I think Cate Blanchett was phenomenal in it, Leonardo DiCaprio, as per usual, phenomenal,
but it just wasn't really my favorite Martin Scorsese film in terms of, you know, putting
it in even the top 5.
But with saying that, I love the film.
I did find it a little, it didn't really capture my attention.
I feel like personally, I got bored.
I don't know if anyone else felt the same way, but I personally got bored with this
film.
That's also kind of why for such a great film, it's a little lower on the list for me just
because personally, I got bored and I didn't love, love, love, love it.
But with saying that, again, the acting in it is phenomenal.
Martin Scorsese directed it phenomenal as per usual.
It's just, you know, not that great for me.
Number 6 on our list is, honestly, if I was going by completely, completely my opinion
and not really like taking in the technical aspects of all these films and just taking
everything into account, this would have been like top 3 for me.
I absolutely love this film.
This film is Shutter Island.
It's the 2010 flick starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
It's almost more of like a horror, Martin Scorsese kind of dipped his foot into like
the horror thriller vibe and I absolutely loved it.
The plot twist was great.
I could rewatch this movie again and again and again and again just because you discover
new things every time you watch this movie.
I love this film so much.
The acting was good.
You know, they have a little aspect of history in there, a little World War II dab.
It was just a great film for me personally, but again, compared to Martin Scorsese, he's
just such a great director.
Compared to his other films, it's just, it doesn't make that top 3 or that top 4, but
again, I loved Shutter Island.
It's probably my favorite, no, my second favorite Martin Scorsese film personally.
The number 5 spot on our list is the 1976 flick known as Taxi Driver starring Robert
De Niro.
I love this film.
I think it was absolutely crazy.
Robert De Niro's character development is so fascinating to watch and for those of you,
since it is an older film, for those of you who haven't watched Taxi Driver, Taxi Driver
has been compared to Joker.
The director of Joker really got a lot of his tips and tricks from Scorsese and both
of the films are extremely similar and I loved Joker, I loved Taxi Driver.
Both are great films, but yeah, to kind of describe Taxi Driver, it's basically kind
of like the blueprint for Joker, like that's literally how I would say it.
Taxi Driver, it's literally about a man kind of losing his mind in a way and it was great.
Robert De Niro, Chef's Kiss, amazing.
I absolutely love Taxi Driver and that's why it's taking the top 5 spot on our list.
The next film on our list is another Robert De Niro film, since we know Martin Scorsese
and Robert De Niro, dynamic duo, it is Raging Bull.
Raging Bull, again, I loved it, basically next to Rocky.
Such a great kind of boxing flick.
Not really my type of movie necessarily, but I can't help but just appreciate how great
the film is.
I believe Robert De Niro actually won Best Actor for this film as well, won lots of awards
and overall, it's just a great film.
There's not much I can go into detail about, but really, really great film.
Raging Bull is number 4 on our list.
And now, jungle please, let's get to our top 3 Martin Scorsese films.
So our number 3 spot is one of my favorites.
I guess these 3 are actually pretty much my favorites, minus Shutter Island, but our top
3 spot goes to the 2006 flick, The Departed, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg,
Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson.
There are so many big names in this film, so it's kind of hard to go wrong.
It, again, is one of a darker, I find it's a darker gangster flick.
It has a darker vibe compared to Goodfellas and some of his other gangster flicks.
Even Casino has a very dark vibe to it, and it's just, man, the acting, everything about
this film is just great.
The irony of the cop being the bad guy, you know what I mean?
It's just, I don't want to spoil anything for you.
This kind of video is just to kind of name the top 10 and be kind of straightforward
with it.
But yeah, The Departed was phenomenal.
Acting phenomenal.
Just such a great film with so many different dynamics that just bring it together to make
it the film it is.
And I think everyone can agree with me that it was a phenomenal film, and it definitely
deserves our top 3 spot on the list.
Now, these next 2 films actually came extremely close.
I really had to sit and decide, okay, what is number 2 and what is number 1?
I really, really had to sit and think.
So our number 2 spot on the list is the 2013 Martin Scorsese flick, The Wolf of Wall Street.
Basically depicting the life of Jordan Belfort.
I watched The Wolf of Wall Street like 2 days ago again.
I could literally watch that movie every day.
First of all, it's hilarious.
If you don't watch that movie and you don't laugh at least 10 times, something is wrong
with you because it is dark humor galore.
I just absolutely love every single part of it.
Leonardo DiCaprio's acting is just, you forget it's Leonardo DiCaprio when you're watching
it.
You're like, that's Jordan Belfort right there.
That's the Wolf of Wall Street because he's just, he's such a bad guy.
It's just phenomenal.
And for anyone who knows me personally, you guys know I love Margot Robbie.
Literally one of my favorite actresses, and that movie is kind of what got her career
really flowing.
Love Margot Robbie in it.
Jonah Hill.
A fun fact about Wolf of Wall Street, Jonah Hill actually only got $60,000 for that role
because he was just so excited to be in a Martin Scorsese film.
And honestly, Martin Scorsese, if you ever see this, I will be in one of your films for
$0.
If you ever need an actress, you know where to find me.
But anyways, Wolf of Wall Street, phenomenal film.
Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for Best Actor.
His performance was absolutely phenomenal.
The movie is very long.
It's about 2 hours and 59 minutes, but it's definitely worth every single second because
that movie, absolutely love.
And now, no surprise, if you've been paying attention, you probably know what goes to
our number one Martin Scorsese film of all time, it is definitely Goodfellas.
I just, I don't think anyone can argue with me.
This film is a masterpiece.
It's arguably one of the best gangster films of like that time period.
Maybe next to like the Godfather movies, but Goodfellas, it has that comedy aspect in it.
It has that cold hearted gangster aspect in it.
It's just a great film.
And honestly, Goodfellas, again, is one of those movies I can watch over and over and
over and over again without getting bored.
It is great.
You got Robert De Niro.
You got Al Pacino.
You got, you just got everyone.
You got everyone in one little spot with a bow wrapped around it.
It was, to me, Goodfellas was the beginning of something beautiful.
It was the beginning of just something great.
I just absolutely love Goodfellas and it definitely deserves our number one spot in the top ten
Martin Scorsese films of all time.
Anyways, guys, I wanted to keep this video as short as possible because I could have
rambled on and on forever.
But thank you guys so much for watching.
