In the Bavarian Alps, the Obersalzberg is a place that hides a dark past. For the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit every year, it’s hard to imagine that 70 years ago, this picturesque landscape was the second center of power for the Nazi regime. After becoming Chancellor, Adolf Hitler spent over 1,000 days here—nearly a quarter of his reign. Over the years, what began as his secondary residence transformed into a massive, secured complex with a sprawling underground network. From the immense window of his futuristic chalet, Hitler had a view of the Untersberg and, in the distance, Austria, his motherland. Perched at 1,800 meters above sea level on the mountainside, his "Eagle’s Nest" offered a panoramic view of the mountainous cirque. Surrounded by his close collaborators and his mistress Eva Braun, he developed his strategies, received his generals, and hosted many foreign dignitaries.
