Some ancient settlements were built in places where the basic requirements for supporting them seem strangely inadequate. Monumental structures rise in landscapes with limited water, poor farmland, scarce timber, or long distances to essential raw materials. Yet people did not merely survive there—they quarried stone, maintained workshops, stored supplies, and sometimes expanded these places for generations. The ruins tell us that a functioning system existed, but much of that system can be remarkably difficult to find. Water sources may have shifted, cultivated land may have disappeared, trade routes may have moved, or resources could have been transported across distances far greater than the surviving architecture suggests. This turns the landscape itself into part of the mystery. A building can reveal how it was constructed, but not necessarily how hundreds or thousands of people were supplied around it every day. And in some ancient places, explaining how people managed to remain there may be far more difficult than explaining how they built anything at all.
