We naturally look for the monument. Ancient builders sometimes seem to have designed everything around the space where no monument existed. Massive walls enclosed empty ground. Buildings were pushed toward the edges of enormous plazas. Circles, avenues, and gateways carefully defined areas where surprisingly little was constructed at all. That emptiness was not necessarily unfinished space. In some places, it appears to have been the entire point. Open ground could hold crowds, separate sacred areas, preserve sightlines, frame distant landmarks, or create a center whose importance came precisely from remaining unobstructed. The difficulty begins when the activities that once filled these spaces leave almost nothing behind. Walls survive; gatherings do not. Stone foundations remain; movement, ceremonies, and temporary structures disappear. Thousands of years later, we may therefore be studying ancient places backwards—concentrating on the buildings because they survived, while the empty spaces between them were what truly gave the entire place meaning.
