The Holy Roman Empire was one of the great hegemonic powers of the European Middle Ages through till the date of its dissolution, during the Napoleonic Wars. With its borders, at different stages, covering Central and Western Europe and parts of Italy, including Rome itself.
With the crowning of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor, in 800 A.D, it was declared they were a revival or continuation of Ancient Rome, hence the name.

But How Roman were they actually?
