Hi everyone! I'm a mom of two living in Switzerland and on this channel I'm sharing what daily life
is like for our family here. My daughter just started her very first year of school here.
She has to leave home around 8 a.m which means before then I have to prepare breakfast and pack
her Znouni box. If you're new to Swiss culture Znouni is a traditional mid-morning snack that
My daughter actually walks to school all by herself. Also she used to go to kindergarten
alone when she was five. In Switzerland kids start kindergarten around age four and by four
it's completely normal for them to make the walk on their own. It teaches them to be independent,
confident from a very young age and of course the incredible safety here in Switzerland
makes it possible for parents to feel completely comfortable letting them go. The thing I love most
about living here is the nature. We've lived here for seven years but every time I look outside I'm
still amazed by how pretty it is. My son goes to daycare three days a week. Daycare here costs a
lot of money but since I don't work three days is plenty. Today I need to pop into the toy store to
get a birthday present for my daughter then I will head to the grocery store and do some shopping.
My husband usually leaves home around 10 a.m so we normally have breakfast together before he leaves.
I really enjoy making a nice breakfast when I have the time. It's kind of my little morning
ritual and it's how I like to start my day. And I just remembered that today I also need
to change the curtains in my daughter's room. I ordered them such a long time ago so if I don't
hang them today I probably won't get a chance to do it once the kids are home. By the way this is
our first apartment in Switzerland and we've been renting it for seven years now. Honestly it's
really hard to find a new apartment here. We've been wanting to move to another place but so far
we haven't had any luck. I really love using reusable shopping bags. I would love to buy more
but unfortunately I just don't have enough space for them. We live in quite an old building so there
is no elevator. Sometimes it's really hard for me to carry all the grocery bags up to the second
floor and on top of that we live on a hill. But thank God I got my driving license a year ago.
So finally I bought a present for my daughter. She's really into handshakes now. We're going to
celebrate her birthday outside with her friends so I also need to buy some snacks for the table.
And of course all we know that Switzerland is very expensive. Grocery shopping can definitely
be a little painful sometimes but honestly the quality of the food there is so good. Everything
is fresh and the quality is amazing so I guess it makes it a little easier to accept the prices.
I got home and it was time for lunch. I don't really eat much when I'm alone. If I have leftovers
in the fridge I usually just eat those instead of cooking something new. On weekends we usually like
to eat out as a family. For the four of us we spent around 100 Swiss francs. Do you think that's
really expensive? Let me know what you think. And my husband and I have this little tradition. Every
Saturday evening we order food and have a little date night at home. It's kind of our way of having
a date without actually going anywhere. We don't have any relatives or grandparents nearby who
could help us from time to time and honestly that's one of the hardest parts of living abroad for us.
I honestly can't imagine how families manage when both parents work and the kids have school
activities and different classes. Even if the kids go to an international school it doesn't really
make your responsibilities at home disappear. There are still so many things to organize and
take care of. So I really respect working parents who manage to balance work, kids and the household
all together.
My daughter came back from school. Today she had afternoon classes so she got home around 4 p.m.
Every two weeks they go to a swimming pool and when she was in kindergarten they used to go to
the forest every Friday. She would always come home with really dirty clothes but honestly we
didn't mind at all. We were just happy that she had such a good time. We actually really loved this part.
One thing I really love about Switzerland is how much they encourage kids to spend time
outdoors and connect with nature. I think it's such a beautiful part of growing up here.
I pick up my son from child care around 5 p.m. and then we have dinner together.
Kids usually go to bed around 9 p.m. and that's pretty much how our day goes. Thank you so much
