Tom Richardson's "Abandoned" project in his own words:
"Remote and abandoned villages, croft houses and sheilings on the western isles and along the wild western seaboard of Scotland have long been a project of mine.

One interesting example is the small island of Ulva. Dotted with abandoned villages and croft houses, the island had a population of 570 way back in 1841 which dwindled to seven in recent years. The reason so many could make a living on such a small island was the boom in the labour intensive kelp industry, however when the bottom fell out of the kelp market the crofters were eventually cleared from the land, many emigrating to Canada.

“When I first became interested photographically I was only intent on showing the ruins in their wild surroundings, it was only recently that their interiors started to intrigue me but unfortunately most were cleared out long ago."
