WELSH FOOTBALL 40s - 60s - Geoff Charles.
From the 1940s through to the 1960s, Geoff Charles (1909–2002) photographed football as part of his wider record of everyday life in Wales. Working as a press photographer, particularly for the Welsh language newspaper Y Cymro, Charles travelled extensively through north, mid and south Wales and regularly encountered football at a local level. His photographs include village and town clubs, amateur teams, youth football, women’s matches, Welsh Cup fixtures and representative games, alongside players, officials and spectators. A 1951 assignment at Treharris, for example, recorded a women’s match between the Webster Street Ladies’ Football Team and the Bryngerwn Giants, while other assignments followed amateur and cup football. These were working press photographs made for contemporary publication, but together they provide a detailed visual record of the places and people involved in Welsh football during the middle decades of the twentieth century.
Across the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Charles’s photographs also record how the physical and social environment of Welsh football changed. Small grounds, basic terraces, changing rooms, touchlines crowded with spectators, muddy pitches, team strips and advertising boards appear alongside the matches themselves. His camera frequently turned away from the immediate action to include supporters and the communities surrounding the game, placing football within the towns and villages where it was played. The resulting photographs document a period before the extensive redevelopment, commercialisation and television coverage that later altered the presentation of British football. They form part of Charles’s archive of approximately 120,000 negatives preserved by the National Library of Wales, providing a substantial photographic record of Welsh society in which football appears not as an isolated sporting subject, but as part of everyday community life.
