German Troops in North Macedonia & Greece (1941) – Exclusive Footage of Athens, Corinth & Mycenae
This remarkable exclusive footage follows German troops from the region around Prilep, in present-day North Macedonia, into occupied Greece in spring 1941. Prilep was then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, invaded by Germany and its Axis allies on 6 April 1941. The soldiers appear to have belonged to or travelled with a Luftwaffe anti-aircraft unit, as Flak guns and related equipment repeatedly appear, although the specific unit cannot be identified.
The journey begins near Prilep with a reconnaissance drive through rugged mountains and a Kübelwagen stuck in deep mud. At Ptolemaida on 20 April 1941, soldiers and officers gather for Adolf Hitler's birthday, with speeches, singing and accordion music. German forces had occupied the town following the Battle of Vevi and capture of the Klidi Pass.
The route continues along Mount Olympus, with motorcycles and half-tracks towing heavy guns. At the Corinth Canal, the film documents a pontoon bridge, followed by a military camp and anti-aircraft positions overlooking the Gulf of Corinth.
The soldiers visit Ancient Corinth, Argos and Mycenae, exploring the Mycenaean citadel, Cyclopean walls and Lion Gate. Other scenes show troop entertainment near Argos, officers having breakfast, attempts to extinguish a burning olive tree near Eleusis, and everyday life in a tent camp. Soldiers use a motor-driven well, wash their mess kits, cool wine bottles and relax with books and newspapers. A humorous sequence introduced as a "heroic battle of a destroyer against a battleship" shows two soldiers fighting for a ball in a water basin.
The final section takes us to Athens. German soldiers visit the Acropolis, followed by slow-motion footage of Evzones outside the Royal Palace. The reel concludes at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus during a performance of Gluck's "Orpheus and Eurydice", showing the audience, orchestra and conductor.
These images provide a rare record of German troops travelling from wartime Yugoslavia through Greece shortly after the 1941 invasion, combining military movements, occupation life and visits to important archaeological sites.
