For twenty years, a small British studio in Berkshire made horror look like nothing else on screen – rich colour, candlelight, crumbling castles, and at the centre of almost every one of them, a woman audiences never forgot.
Some were dancers and models before Hammer found them. One survived a Nazi camp as a child and reached the West with almost nothing. One went from a vampire film to prime-time American television. Six of them are still with us, in their seventies, eighties and nineties. Six we have lost. This is all twelve, as they were and as they are now.
