Hello, my little ones. I'm Luna, and this is my friend Twinkle.
There you are, all tucked in, warm and soft. I'm so glad you're here with me tonight.
How was your day today, little one? It's all finished now. There's nothing left to carry.
Have you ever wished, deep down, for a friend of your very own? Someone small and gentle
and just for you? And have you ever been kind to some little creature? A bird, or a fish,
or something small that needed help, just because your heart was soft toward it?
There's a gentle old story about that, from long ago. China, come along with me,
down to a wide, misty river. You are resting warm in the soft grass on a green riverbank
in old China, long ago. A wide river winds by, slow and silver. Green mountains
rise soft in the mist beyond. It's a quiet, gentle evening. And there, by the water,
is a little boy. His name is Liu. He's a kind child, with a gentle face,
a little lonely, for he has no brothers or sisters. And he often comes to sit by the river,
or on his own. This evening, Liu sits at the water's edge, watching the river slide by,
wishing softly, the way you might for a friend who was just his. And then, he sees something
there, in the shallows. Something small, caught among the reeds. A tiny creature,
no bigger than a little fish, gleaming jade green in the fading light. He leans close, and,
oh, it's a tiny dragon. A little water dragon, with soft whiskers and small, kind eyes,
tangled gently in the reeds. Too tired to free himself, Liu reaches in,
ever so carefully, with his small, gentle hands. There, now, he whispers,
I have you. And, softly, softly, he loosens the reeds, and lifts the little dragon, free.
He cups the little dragon in his hands, in a little pool of river water, and holds him
close and warm. The tiny dragon looks up at him, and his small eyes are grateful.
And something passes between them, quiet and kind. Liu lowers his hands into the cool river,
and lets the little dragon swim, free. But the dragon doesn't swim away. He circles Liu's
fingers once, softly, thank you, thank you, and stays close by, in the shallows.
And from that evening on, they are friends. Every day, Liu comes down to the river,
and every day, the little water dragon is there, waiting for him, glad to see him come.
They spend the soft, golden days together. The little dragon swims, loops around his hands,
and leaps in silver arcs over the water, and rests his small head against Liu's palm,
while the river murmurs by. Liu is never lonely now. He has a friend of his very own,
small and gentle, and just for him. And the little dragon, who was tired, and tangled,
and alone, has someone who loves him. And as the seasons turn,
softly, the little water dragon grows. Longer, and stronger, and more graceful,
his jade green cords shining, his whiskers long and fine, but his heart stays just as gentle,
and Liu is still his dearest friend. Now, one summer, the rains do not come.
Day after day, the sky stays pale and cloudless. The wide river grows low and slow.
The green fields turn dry, and the little plants droop, and the whole village grows thirsty
and worried. Liu sees the farmers looking up at the empty sky, and the little rice plants
wilting in the sun, and his own kind heart grows heavy.
Oh, he whispers to his friend at the river, if only the rain would come.
The water dragon listens. He looks at his dear friend's worried face,
and at the thirsty, drooping land all around, and a great and gentle purpose
stirs in his kind heart. For this is what water dragons are born to do, my little ones.
Though the little dragon had never done it before, he looks at Liu, softly, as if to say,
wait for me, I will help, and he rises up out of the river. Up, he climbs into the pale sky,
his long jade cords winding gracefully through the air, higher and higher,
the way a ribbon lifts on the wind. Liu watches from the back, his face turned up in wonder.
High among the heavens, the water dragon breathes out, soft and long, and calls the clouds,
and they come, great, soft, gray clouds gathering gently from every corner of the sky,
drawing together over the thirsty land, and then, softly, the rain begins to fall.
Down it comes, cool and silver in a gentle, steady rain, over the dry fields,
over the drooping plants, over the whole thirsty village. The first rain in such a long while,
and below, the people lift their faces to the sky, and laugh for joy. The rice plants lift
their leaves, the river swells cool and full again, and Liu dances in the soft rain, laughing,
turning his face up to his friend in the clouds. When the land has drunk its fill,
the water dragon comes, winding gently down from the sky, and settles once more in the wide,
full river, beside his dear friend. And the little dragon, not so little now,
makes the river his home for always, the gentle guardian of the water, watching over the village,
keeping it green, keeping it fed, keeping it safe. And every evening, Liu comes down to the riverbank,
just as he always has, and his friend is always there, winding up softly through the water
to greet him, whiskers shining, eyes kind. A kind child who helped a small creature,
a gentle dragon who never forgot, and a river that flows on, cool and full,
watched over by a friendship to this very day. A small kindness can grow into something
that never ends, my little ones, like a river flowing on and on, and a friend who's always there.
The misty river grows soft at its edges now. Liu and the gentle dragon, and the winding water,
drift slowly away. The story folds itself up gently, and tucks itself away until another evening.
That's the one for tonight, my little ones. You did enough today. You were enough today,
and there's all the time in the world to rest now. You are warm. You are exactly where you belong.
Good night, my little ones. Sleep soft. I'll see you next time with another old story.
You rest, you dream, you sleep, and easy the whole night through.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are.
