Someone asks Eckhart Tolle what he thought of a person he has just met. His honest answer is nothing. Not as a slight. He simply did not form a view. If pressed, he would have to go back and start thinking about it, assembling an opinion out of what the person said and how they behaved. Left alone, he is content to let a human being be there without a verdict attached. Most of us cannot do that. There is an assessment forming before the conversation ends, and a commentary running afterwards, because personalities are endlessly interested in other personalities. It is one of the most reliable subjects of conversation there is. What changes is what you start noticing. Look closely and much of what a personality does is a script, a set of lines and moves absorbed long ago and repeated, with the same patterns turning up in person after person. Once you see that, the surface becomes less absorbing, and something else becomes visible behind it. He describes it as light through a lampshade. Some personalities are dense and very little comes through. Others are more transparent, and you meet something deeper than the conditioned self standing in front of you. Density is not about money or status either. You can have a private jet and be extremely heavy, and you can have nothing at all and still carry yourself as a very important person, complaining about everybody, each complaint adding a little more weight. The way through is not to decide everyone is wonderful. It is to stop turning what somebody does into who somebody is. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
