I’m only a few days into full-time vanlife… and already things haven’t quite gone to plan. 😂🚐
I’d planned an amazing road trip through the Yorkshire Dales, but after noticing a problem with my van, I ended up stuck in Kettlewell for two days waiting to find out if I could get it fixed.
Not exactly how I imagined the beginning of full-time vanlife!
But being stuck in one of the most beautiful villages in the Yorkshire Dales isn't exactly the worst place to be, so instead of letting it ruin the trip, I decided to make the most of it.
I got the laptop out, found somewhere to work and focused on another big part of this experiment — trying to build an online income of £100 a day.
If I can eventually make that consistently while travelling, I might actually be able to keep living in the van for much longer than the month I originally planned.
So this episode is a bit of everything: the reality of vanlife when things go wrong, working online from the road, exploring Kettlewell and trying to figure out whether I can turn this new lifestyle into something sustainable.
But first… I need my van back! 😬
Thank you so much for all the support on my first 48 hours of full-time vanlife. I genuinely wasn't expecting so many of you to come along for this new chapter. ❤️
Do you think £100 a day working online from the road is achievable?

🚐 ABOUT ME Hi, I'm Sara. I lived in a van full time for 2 years while my house was being renovated, and the experience completely changed how I view freedom, money, and simple living. Now that the renovations are finished, I'm back in the house paying off renovation debt, keeping costs as low as possible, and working hard to build online income through YouTube and other projects. My goal is simple: create a sustainable income that allows me to spend extended periods on the road again and eventually make vanlife a permanent part of my future. On this channel, I share the honest reality of vanlife, budgeting, debt payoff, simple living, travel, and my journey back towards financial freedom and life on the road.

A van-lifer's journey through the Yorkshire Dales is disrupted by a flat tire in Kettlewell. While awaiting repairs, the narrator balances remote work on an e-book with reflections on the vulnerabilities of mobile living. After a quick, affordable tire fix and a refreshing shower, the trip concludes with a drive to Blackpool to visit their children.
I'm ready to return, my every 48 hours of most vibrant life for solo
I had the right way forward at the Wales Selection Camp
On the second day, I realized I was part of the problem with the van.
It was during those plans that the choice was made.
Felly, are you going to teach me and come back the same way?
Hello, I'm coming to Kettlewell in the Wales Selection Valley.
It's about 7 o'clock in the day.
I've come back in this plan. This is my number today
The first two have been great.
I feel like two days are easy
By the end of the second day, the regulation begins to come a little more.
the small fields.
I want to achieve my goals.
I carry out my duties every day over here.
We will make this announcement known to the world openly
I feel my hair.
Let's take a look.
I'm better than I was, I'm feeling better.
Power, I'm good at power,
The wind is blowing hard, and there are some words of a kind of song.
Felly, that makes it better.
I am receiving support with the period.
The school of the deaf and dumb couldn't be where I could manage to do it
The current weather was good
I managed to get a lot done yesterday, but today I want to head off. I do have, I've got a
a mess everywhere, and I wanted to tidy up, but to be honest, I want to get moving to my first
Little um spot, oh no, I was, I was going for this like a walk thing, but I got a blister and I haven't
Got any plasters? Anyway, let's uh, we'll pack up and head to where I might have got some.
plasters, but no blister plasters—that's going to be sore. Maybe I can just plaster it up. Um, yeah.
Let's get going because I want to go and see this waterfall, and then I have got
Loads of online work to do, oh no, change of plan—I have a tire problem, I blew this one up last night.
And it's down again. Okay, well, there's a spanner in the works. Luckily, I've just had a little Google.
There's a garage in Kettlewell, just literally a minute down the road, but it's not open.
For someone else, it's not even past eight thirty yet, so I figured I might as well tidy up.
and actually get dressed and get myself organized if I have to hang around here, hopefully they can
Fix that for me, hello. Oh, hi. The front lights are higher. I blew it up last night.
Yeah, and it happened again this morning, and he was saying you could probably only blow it up.
Can you order me a bottle? And if you can, how long would that take? Do you know?
wouldn't be today anyway, it'll be tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow afternoon, yeah. Oh, I'll just
Hang around then, right? Perfect, nice one. Thank you so much. I'll see you tomorrow. Well, it seems
My adventure in the Yorkshire Tales has come to a bit of an abrupt kind of end—it won't end, um
The guy said they're going to order me a tire, but it won't arrive until half past three tomorrow.
Just across the way, literally the garage is there—he said I can park in there for it's just
Like an honesty box thing for three pounds, I might park there; I'll go back to my spot, I'm not sure.
We're hanging around here, so it must be a workday, I guess. Let's get to work. I'm not gonna lie.
I'm trying to stay positive and be okay with this, but I'll be honest—I'm pretty damn miffed.
It's good that I can just spend a lot of time working, but I had such a lovely day.
I planned to put my swimmers on, and everything I found, I discovered a waterfall I was going to go to—I was going to
Have a little swim, it was gonna be epic, and now, stupid damn tire, right back in my spot. I'm just
into the van to work because it feels like that's what today's going to be; I might see if there's any
like little walking trails around or anything, I mean, it's a beautiful place, I'm not, you know
I can't really complain about being stuck here, um, it's making me think though of like
Things like getting stuck, I've never thought about this before. I'm like, what if I didn't have it?
enough water, or what if I don't have enough food? I don't even think there's a shop here, like...
something like my tire, you know, I've got my electric blow-up finger
blow up a finger, what are they called? blow up a finger, okay, we'll call it that, um, like I could
Just blow up that tire and go find a shop for food and water, but if it were something more serious
with the van, I've never thought of it like, when the van is your home, when your van breaks down
Your house is broken and you're stuck.
Interesting, I cooked up a lot of tofu, vegetables, and potatoes yesterday, so I'm going to
Heat it up now, and have it— it's not lunchtime, it's only 11, but I've only had a couple of oranges.
So I'm going to heat that up now, always with some hot sauce, I guess, when things go wrong like this.
whole problem today you've got to see the positives in everything, and I've had an absolutely
Amazingly productive day—I've more or less finished. I'm going to finish working on it this
evening, um, more or less finished my little ebook thing for my food channel, so I've had like such a
Good work day, um, which is a good thing, I guess. The waterfall would have been nicer, but yeah, I've had
Yeah, time's flown— it's already half past five, and I'm still in the same spot. The sun is, like, I don't know...
know if you can tell, but the sun is pouring through my door here, opening up so it's
Lovely, um, some kids are having a wild time out there—they're screaming and screaming, having a good time.
Lovely time, um, I think I just hear them laughing and playing and stuff, um, but I'm hoping, yeah, I'm
hoping that the ebook, once I've sorted it out by the end of today, that's my goal
goal, but that will be set up to go—I'm going to do some email things for email marketing
For it and stuff, but yeah, that's my uh, that's my goal for the rest of the day. I think I was
I'm going to move to that car park much earlier; actually, I could stay here now that I'm thinking about it.
I'm going to have to let the air out of my tire to move around because it's completely flat now.
The day I've been going out and taking a quick look at it, and it's down, so I might blow it up.
The tire—I want to—I might just take a little walk around actually, I'll walk around there and
I mean, do I actually want to move there, or is it just a nice spot and I don't want to be a bother, mate?
Because there are houses there. I mean, look at me—I've got a flat tire. I don't know.
I might take a little walk; in fact, you know what? Yeah, I've been in the van all day. Let's do it.
I was thinking, yeah, let's go for a walk. To be honest, that sun is going to go behind that big hill.
Pretty soon, how cute is Kettlewell though? My van's just up there—I can't remember the way, I think.
It's down here, and it's absolutely bloody freezing when you're in that sun not dressed.
Yeah, exactly—literally, that's how close my van was, just around that corner there.
and the garage is just here, so I was lucky in that regard, I guess you know what I think, rather
Instead of blowing up my tire and all that hassle, I think I'll just stay right where I am. I don't know, like that.
That's a good, nice little spot, though, but nah, I'm just gonna stay right where I am.
There are a lot of hikers, you can see them back there—lots of hikers around, so I assume
There are some nice walks; it's beautiful, um, so beautiful. Um, yeah, I guess there are some.
Some nice little walks and things—I think tomorrow I might go for a walk in the morning.
As long as I get my e-book sorted tonight, oh, they do have a shop—Kettlewell Village Store.
Actually języ, I felt like I've seen it, actually north of, by the way, turn left at the巧克
And left over the bridge— isn't that the most adorable sentence you've ever heard?
Is that the maypole he remembers, maypole dancing?
I love a bit of maypole dancing. Is that a maypole? Surely that's not a maypole. I don't know.
It's a lovely evening; it seems a shame to go and sit back in the van.
It's so sad, the whole making money online thing—I just got a notification through from Etsy.
I think I've mentioned before that I created some digital products for foster carers.
Years and years ago, they used to sell really well, um, but I don't get many sales anymore.
These days, but I've just had to say, I'll come through, um, £13.86, so that's a win for today, that's a win for today.
Can you help me pay for the tire? It's going to cost me a fortune tomorrow. Good morning, it's freezing out here.
Um, yeah, my evening didn't go as planned. I was planning, as I said, to get that book, all
The e-book is all finished and available for sale and whatever, and yeah, no, my friend called me.
I was talking to them for ages, and then my sister called me, so I ended up talking to her even longer.
So I ended up doing nothing all evening except chatting with people, so I need to get up now.
and get the book finished and finalized, but it's too cold—I want to stay cozy, oh
I was just doing some cleaning up; I was washing up. I don't think
Yeah, I'm running out of water. I'm pretty sure—look at the level on that. I thought I, um...
I thought I had filled up before I left home, but I mustn't have, but I'm okay because I did.
I did bring an extra bottle to drink, and I also remembered—I showed you this through the
Throughout the day I put some, I did put some water in there, so I'm just gonna
Use that water; it should last me until I get home. I'll be honest, what time are we on now? 138, I'm...
So ready to get out of this place, I know these things happen, but it's just like these.
a few days, if I have to go back and take care of the foster kids for the weekend, I wanted it to be
more about things like exploring around the Yorkshire Dales and how I'm so disappointed that that's
not how it's turned out, but it is what it is; I can't be too disappointed, and I have managed to
Get some good work done as well, um, although not enough with all those phone calls last night.
but I've realized it's a learning process, I guess all of this is part of a learning process
I need to make sure I'm filling up with water when I leave home, um, when I leave home.
On Sunday, I'll have the kids on Sunday when I leave home on Sunday, so make sure I fill up my water.
and actually having that emergency backup container thing—well, it's not really a jug, it's a massive
big bottle that was, um, really handy because now yeah, I'm good for water until
When I'm back home, I'm back home on Saturday; it's Thursday today. I've got enough water. I'll
I'll be fine until I get back home. I feel really gross today, like, really gross. I would have wanted to have a
shower on Wednesday, I think I'm just going to have to get a bit more used to the fact that
I'm gross, um, yeah, I think I'm going tomorrow. I think I might try, even though I'm home on Sunday, I feel...
like I might stop by a service station on the way, you know, to pick up the kids for a few hours so
That's my plan, anyway. What else have I learned? I've learned that I need to remember. I'm hoping.
that I won't need to, um, like, but then I suppose, okay, my thought process here, oh, because I
I need to remember, um, you know, my charger, what are they called, you know, the thing to plug into the van to charge it?
I was kind of hoping that would be enough, so that just solar and driving would be sufficient.
to charge the battery, and it's been like, I think I'm at around 50 percent now, and I forgot
To turn my inverter off, the last two nights my inverter has been running all night.
keeping my fridge cold, um, so that was a little schoolgirl error, but I just need to remember
to bring that charger for emergencies, I could maybe go to a campsite every so often if I
I'd like to take a shower at the campsite too, I guess, so I can charge my devices and have showers.
So I need to remember that when I go home, I think that's all I've learned so far, yeah, I
I just want to get out of here. I've found a park up—I think I found a little park up there because
Tomorrow I'm going to have to be there, I don't actually know what time I'm picking up the kids, but I have to be there.
somewhat near Blackpool-ish, I've had a quick look on Google Maps just now and found
Maybe like a small spot, oh, something else I've thought of—I need to have, like, a little
a bag or something for day clothes, a small laundry bag—I'll just grab one from home and
I'll make a list on my phone right now of what I need to remember when I come back out on Sunday.
Right, it's finally time—I'm gonna pump up this tyre and head around to the garage.
You can sort it; I'm just waiting for him to do the tyre. I could have come down here for a bit.
I didn't know this was here, or maybe it's not even a swim—it's about an inch deep, but...
Fixed it? Oh, really? What was it? Just a screw? Oh, was it a bonus? He fixed it—it only cost £22.50.
I told him we could have done that yesterday, couldn't we? He said, "Well, yeah, sod's law, though."
If you took it off, you probably would have needed a new one, which yeah, I kind of agree with.
Um, I think I've changed my mind about where I'm going, so yeah, let's head off just in time.
Rain has started. Excuse me. Car coming through. Go. Oh, there's more of them. Hello. Thank you.
Have a nice evening. Five feet for the night. No change of plan. There's no signal. There's a little
Town, let me stop in the front for a sec—there's a little town just two minutes up ahead.
They're in Lonsdale or something like that. I'm going up there to see if there's somewhere.
With a signal that I could park, I found this little lay-by by the church in the village.
They're on a very steep hill. Can I put up with that? I think I can. I can't be bothered driving.
Can you tell how steep it is anymore? I don't know if you can tell, but I think it'll do. We'll hop in.
The bath and see, yeah, I can handle the hill. I'll just sleep the opposite way from how I usually do.
So my head is higher than my feet; I don't really want to be sleeping with my feet up in the air.
I'm not cooking anything with water tonight because I'm having that pizza I bought. I bought myself a pizza.
Treat myself for the fact that I'm out of Kettlewell—there's nothing wrong with Kettlewell.
It's a lovely little place, and the fact that the tire only cost me 22 pounds was a pleasant surprise.
Well, I was expecting to have to get a new tire, so I'm pretty sleepy. I think I just want to
Eat my pizza and get into bed. It's raining. Well, good night. I'm getting into bed. It's only it's
Crazy early, I don't know, half past seven, quarter past seven, no, not quarter past seven, quarter to eight, quarter to eight
Eight, but yeah, like I said, I'm super tired. I'm crazy looking forward to washing this hair tomorrow.
Good morning. I had an absolutely wonderful sleep—so good, I didn't wake up until eight o'clock. I'm just going to tidy up a bit.
Up, I'm going to head to the services for a shower because I know I keep complaining a lot about my hair.
I need to solve this problem. I washed my hair on Monday morning; it's now Friday morning, and I...
just feel disgusting, maybe I'll have to buy a lot of shower stuff or something, I don't know, but for
Now let's go to the services. Oh no, I can't get my handbrake off. I tightened it too much last night.
Oh okay, I'm not quite sure what to do here. I literally can't get it up.
Okay, I've done it. I just need to really crank it up. All right, let's go.
Okay, it's not in the women's bathroom; it's in the women's toilet. Let's see if there's
Somewhere else, dare to look, shall we? Well, I feel like a brand-new woman after that shower, wow.
That felt so good, I'm just going to head over, kind of toward Blackpool way, now to go and have the kids.
over the weekend, and then I'll be back to the van on Sunday night. Thank you so
Thank you so much for watching, and I'll see you very soon—I've had a wonderful week.
