There is something strange hidden inside our Sun.
Scientists have spent decades studying it, and today we can do something that would have sounded impossible just a few generations ago.
We can actually look inside the Sun.
Not with a camera, of course.
We use the waves travelling through it, almost like earthquakes allow scientists to study the inside of Earth.
And when researchers compared what they found inside the Sun with what our standard models predicted...
they discovered something wasn't quite right.
The boundary between two major layers of the Sun doesn't appear exactly where the models say it should.
The speed of sound travelling through parts of the solar interior is slightly different from what the models predict.
And then there is something even stranger.
The Sun's surface contains dramatically less lithium than scientists would expect.
For years, these problems have been treated as separate mysteries.
But now, a new study has proposed a possibility that sounds almost unbelievable.
What if these strange features are actually the scars of something that happened to the Sun billions of years ago?
Something the Sun swallowed.
And scientists don't think it was a comet.
They don't think it was an asteroid.
Their models point toward something much larger.
A planet.
And not just any planet.
A world several times more massive than Earth.
A super-Earth.
If this idea is correct, then more than four billion years ago, our young Sun may have consumed an entire planet.
And here's where the story gets even more interesting.
Because we have no idea what that planet looked like.
Was it just a giant ball of rock?
Could it have had an atmosphere?
Could it have had oceans?
And was it perhaps in a region where conditions were suitable for life?
We don't know.
There is currently no evidence that this planet ever contained life.
But the fact that scientists can even begin asking these questions comes from some very strange fingerprints hidden inside our star.
So how did they find them?
