AI GeneratedRepublican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany and his pilot survived an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau after a total power loss. The broadcast also covers local community initiatives, a detailed autumn weather and foliage forecast, a journalistic retrospective on 9/11, the sport of regulation croquet, and a lighthearted human-interest story from Denver.
Stories that matter to you. Fox 6 News at 5 starts right now with breaking news.
We are following breaking news tonight. Republican candidate for governor Tom
Tiffany is safe after his plane made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau.
His campaign says the plane lost power as they were flying back from a campaign
event yesterday. They say after landing they called 9-1-1,
got out of the plane, swam to a shallow area of lake and they were
they were okay and taken to the hospital from there. Now within 15 minutes that's
when the Wausau fire department rescued them from the lake. Ben Hanson is joining us now
live on Zoom and Ben you are on the way to Wausau now. Catch our viewers up to speed
on what you hope to do when you get there. Yeah what we're really trying to do we're trying to
get a video of the plane as best as we can right now. We're heading up there hoping to get probably
an hour and a half of sunlight to get video of the plane that's still in the water right now
in Lake Wausau. I was looking at online posts on Facebook, on Instagram on our drive up here
and it looks like the plane is still very visible. The back of the plane has this almost v-shape
poking up out of the water where you can see its back tail of the plane. So that's still poking up
and even the water it hasn't gone down far enough where you can almost kind of still see the top of
plane. So we're going to try to get video of that as best as possible. We're going to talk with locals
that might be around the lake area who might have seen anything last night or are reacting to seeing
this in their hometown lake this morning of the governor candidate of Wisconsin. So that was riding
in that last night so kind of their reaction to this entire thing this happening in their hometown.
Also trying to get in contact with the FAA to talk to them about when the recovery
process of this plane may happen. I was talking to the Marathon County Sheriff's Office earlier
and they were saying that a timeline isn't clear on when they are going to be able to
go into the lake and start trying to remove this plane out of the water. They said that the FAA
is the ones heading this investigation into this emergency water landing. They said they would have
the best idea for when that timeline will start. I reached out to them still have not gotten a
response yet but we're headed up there to see if there are any efforts already happening and we'll
be there even later a little later into the night to see if anything starts happening then. But for
now just trying to make as many calls as possible and figure things out with this still developing
story Christina. And Ben you mentioned just the shape of the plane and how it has the tail end
in that v-shape. Tom Tiffany mentioned that in the press conference today how he and the pilot
were actually standing on top of that plane before they jumped into the water to swim to shore.
We heard from him in an emotional press conference just a couple of hours ago
but what stood up out to you when you were watching him explain what happened when they
lost power and you heard the pilot say buckle your seat belts and make it tight.
I mean where they landed the plane in Lake Wausau and not far away from one another. So
in that final approach he said the pilot told him to pull that seat belt a little bit tighter
and he said it was only about 10 minutes before they actually made contact with the water and
tried to land there. So again neither of the pilot or Tom Tiffany had much time to prepare
from when they knew something was going on with the plane to the point of figuring out yeah this
is going to be a situation that we're going to have to land in the water. It was only about 10 seconds
that Tom Tiffany was saying that took for that initial something's wrong to them touching the
water. So not much time to prepare. Also Tom Tiffany taking the situation seriously but also
trying to make light of it repeating many times that he is very very very thankful that he got
out of this entire incident unscathed. Him and the pilot both with leaving the situation with
very minor injuries. Tiffany with just little racial up his right eyebrow he said he got 12
stitches on that. But still during the press conference today Tom Tiffany was very emotional
during it. Even at times he was taking tissues and wiping his eyes because of the tears that
were coming while he was talking about the incident and especially how he was talking about
when he got to reunite with his family at the hospital after the fact. So emotional but also
just a whirlwind of events happening for the governor candidate last night. Yeah and Ben it's
almost like we saw the moment it hit him when he was talking during that press conference and he
even said it himself and you mentioned too it was like they were making light of it just to almost
get through that initial shock. But then when he did get emotional during the press conference he
even said I think it's just now settling in what happened. And I did some someone asked him were
you fearful? Were you afraid? Is this going to change how you navigate things moving forward?
And he said his adrenaline set and it wasn't fear it was adrenaline. And just seeing the governor
the candidate there talking about this and how you mentioned to it happening so fast it really was
something we don't hear about often and I know we heard from his opponent David Crowley today as
well. We'll get to what he said in just a minute but Ben for our viewers at home watching how far
away is this from southeastern Wisconsin and if you're not familiar with the area can you tell
people how far your drive is and what your ETA is? Yeah so we're expecting to get there around
just after six o'clock so hopefully we'll have some sunlight to get good video of the plane for
viewers and what the situation looks like right now. I mean and this Lake Wausau it's right in
the middle of the downtown area there's residential and commercial spaces all around the lake so it's
not a it's not a secluded area of Wausau it's very much in the middle of everything. So we're
going to hopefully get down there get some even some sound talk to some people that may have
witnessed it or reaction from just seeing that plane in the water now but there's a lot to
unpack we'll hope to bring you the latest tonight at nine and ten Christina. All right Ben thank you
so much drive safe there as you head there I know we'll check in with you later this evening when
you do arrive and if you have any photos of when you get there of that plane if it is still visible
from the water I know you'll keep us updated. Ben Hanson thank you so much. Of course. So we have
been talking about that emotional press conference and we want to actually have you listen now to
what Tom Tiffany had to say when he was describing the moments that the plane went down and the
injuries that he suffered. I have 12 stitches up in my eyebrow and but other than that just a few
scratches and we are just really fortunate we're really fortunate that God was looking after us
last night and we're also really fortunate that the first responders those behind me the fire
department the sheriff's department as well as the city of Wausau police for their quick response
we're really fortunate what they did and I can't thank them enough for helping us in this situation
I have to say that the gravity of this is probably just hitting me at this point
because we were making jokes every step of the way last night though we knew it was a serious
situation and but we we tried to keep it light through the whole thing and we're just really
fortunate that we had a skilled pilot who knew what he's doing as we were going down after we
lost power and just really fortunate he knew what he was doing and from what I understand from Len
he pulled up the landing gear for those of you familiar with planes if you leave your landing
gear down I guess when you do a water landing your plane can cartwheel he was savvy enough
and quick enough to think about we got to make sure and pull that landing gear up he did that
and might have saved us as a result of doing that so anyhow it's quite a night quite a day and
just grateful for the Lord for sparing us to see another day on the other side of the aisle
democratic candidate for governor David Crowley posted on x saying he wishes Tiffany a quick
recovery we also talked to him earlier today well look we can talk politics all we want right but
at the end of the day we are still human beings and I look at him just like I would look at any
other neighbor and so we want to make sure that he is safe we want to make sure that everybody
in this country is safe and that we bring humanity back to politics and I think that we have been
focusing on on everything that really divides us but it's things like this that really brings
people together and my thoughts are with him and again look forward to seeing him on the campaign
trip of course we are continuing to follow this story tonight and we'll have more reports at 9
and 10 you can also find Tiffany's whole news conference and all of the latest updates on
fox6now.com and fox local so today it started off it's sunny I was outside it was gorgeous and then
it got a little bit rainy and now it's a little bit chilly Tom yeah feels like fall doesn't it
Christina it does but I like the fall temperature yeah well you're gonna like it tonight then wait
until you see this crisp air coming in yes we had some rain midday light rain now we have the
sunshine back out okay you're ready for this you're sitting down take a look frost advisories
not for us but in places like Tomah and then up into the north woods of Wisconsin overnight
tonight it is going to be chilly in fact they're going to be in the 30s in the blue shaded area for
us most of us will be in the 40s away from the lake overnight so here we go with those skies
clearing out look at this very fall like 67 degrees winds are out of the northwest and look
at the dew point 45 our air is very dry and with the clear skies tonight that's going to allow that
temperature to really start to drop so we're in the 60s area wide here this evening but again after
sunset we're really going to start to drop courtesy of these dew points that are really dropping
they're going to keep dropping as we go throughout the night look at this look at that front all the
way down to the south now so we have really cooled things down and that's going to set the stage
for our chilly night on the way tonight so for the rest of our evening we'll drop through the 60s but
50s on the way by late evening 40s overnight now we do have some rain on the way tomorrow
christina i'll time that out for you in a few minutes back to you in the studio all right tom
talk to you then manassas high school is still picking up the pieces after a tornado came through
the area over the summer but that didn't stop them from helping their fellow students in need
the special homecoming drive they held to help those impacted by the tornado
manassas high school's homecoming is coming up next month but for many whose homes were damaged
or destroyed in the july tornado are finding the perfect outfit to wear hasn't been a priority that
is where a special group of volunteers come in josh cavender from our sister station in green
bay explains dresses suits shoes and bags manassas high school is collecting homecoming donations for
students impacted by the tornado i think it's super important for everyone to feel involved
and feel like they have a part like and they can like they have the resources to be a part of
everything and just feel like everyone else not feel left out especially if they can't afford
those things we had like a lot of families lose everything and they needed to just get back on
their feet a lot of people are not thinking of homecoming and stuff right now but we like ailey
said we just want everyone to feel included the drive started september 8th and the collection
has already needed to move to a larger space to keep the racks from overflowing just in a couple
short days we've had we probably have one and a half full clothing racks full of dresses and then
we have a couple of other bins that we are also doing pants and shirts and clothing items for the
gentlemen as the community is still working on cleanup from the devastation caused by the july
tornado gearhart says it's important for students to find a sense of normalcy a yearly tradition
like homecoming is the perfect way to get back into the routine students agree and especially
like everything that we've gone through like um if you've lost a bunch of stuff this is like
a good time to like forget about it and have fun yeah we don't want anyone to ever feel like they
can't come to something because homecoming is something that is supposed to get your mind off
of things get you back into school and we just want to take away that worry of having to buy a
dress and the heels and everything the school is holding an event on september 26th for students
to try on and take home the donated clothes in menasha josh cavender fox 11 news menasha high
school is accepting donations through september 22nd it will then clean and prepare the clothing
for pickup on the 26th tom earlier you said frost and that is crazy to think we're already at that
point we're halfway through september and we're already dealing with 60s i know and you felt it
didn't you i did and i enjoyed it yes very full like and it is just amazing how fast it can turn
right and that's what we're seeing now the sunshine is back out after some clouds and
light rain showers midday today let me show you what's going on with a live look over downtown
where look at this we hit 67 for a high in milwaukee we were right on target with the low at
58 but well below average on the high side today 629 our sunrise 705 that's going to be our beautiful
sunset later on tonight by the way look at the record low 37 on this date in 1964 nope we don't
have to worry about touching or breaking that record but up to the north oh they're going to
be in the 30s and that's where a frost advisory is in effect for the north woods overnight and
just a little bit there east of lacrosse towards tomah as well they're going to dip into the 30s
in those areas for us most of us will be in the 40s by morning especially away from lake michigan
and let me explain the reasoning behind that here 67 degrees that's our current temperature
wind out of the northwest so it's ushering in that cooler drier air mass but look at the dew
point 45 so our air is very dry now and we talked when dew points were in the 70s how the air
temperature will never drop below the dew point so when you have dew points in the 70s it just
stays sticky and warm overnight right but think about this with the clear skies in place and these
low dew points or the drier air now that air temperature can drop into the 40s so dew point
is really critical not only for how it feels outside but also for low temperatures and that's
why it's going to be so chilly later tonight so here we are in the 60s dew points again that's
the critical number here northwest early winds right so it's blowing in that drier air and those
dew points are going to stay low tomorrow around 50 we do see a surge on tuesday briefly to 64
back to the 50s on wednesday and then late in the week into saturday so friday saturday we'll go up
again with a second storm system coming in but all in all not a bad stretch of weather here
humidity wise so there goes that frontal boundary down to the south clear skies in place as we
broaden out the view this is our next storm system up towards seattle that is going to come into play
tomorrow and into tuesday and may even linger into the middle part of the week now good news
the storm prediction center has taken us out of that marginal risk for severe weather severe
weather can't rule it out overnight tomorrow night but overall it looks fairly low i think
heavy rain is likely the greater threat so let's talk about that latest data with skyvision plus
take you through here hour by hour and as we go throughout the morning tomorrow mostly clear skies
so we wake up to sunshine here comes the rain after 2 p.m so most of the daytime hours dry
tomorrow after 2 3 p.m here comes some rain could have some heavier bouts of rain and some rumbles
not being ruled out i think the heaviest corridor of rain may stay just up to our northwest in
central wisconsin look at this though eight o'clock tomorrow night we have some patchy drying time but
look at the strong storms developing out in iowa that's going to be the question for us overnight
tomorrow night so now we're firmly implanted in what we call the warm sector here at 11 o'clock
tomorrow night and here come those thunderstorms probably after about 2 a.m on monday let's say
2 to 6 a.m for a time frame yeah we could have a couple of squirrely storms i don't think it's
going to be anything crazy but we could have a couple of strong storms there then as we go into
tuesday really just a couple of rain showers and maybe a rumble of thunder mixed in there as well
so let's put it all together for you with your six-day planner again rain after 2 p.m some dry
time in the evening thunderstorms overnight chance for some storms on tuesday some showers and cooler
on wednesday second storm system friday into saturday so christina got a couple of storms
on the way and certainly some rain we'll have more weather for you coming up in just a couple
of minutes we're talking drought and fall colors welcome back to fox local it is 5 22 and we are
talking weather uh tom wisconsin weather it always goes through a lot but now we're in that stage
where the leaves might start to change but i know you have an explainer on maybe how that's
impacted based on what we're seeing today and droughts take us through it yeah christina you
know there's a lot that comes into play when it comes to those leaf colors as we head into fall
and there are many different factors here one of which is cold air so let's talk about that first
i don't we recently talked about this with the frost advisory that's in effect especially for
northwoods of wisconsin where temperatures are going to dip into the 30s now the leaves can
handle 30s for a night or two but here's what you don't want you don't want temperatures below 30
degrees for a long period of time because that can stunt the leaf color change if you will so
you don't want a deep freeze yeah a little frost fine 32 33 34 degrees you're fine but if you get
into that 27 28 degree range we consider a deep freeze to be under about 28 degrees if you get
there now you're talking about trouble so if we end up seeing that especially up to the north
in the next couple of weeks before peak color that could be a problem now step two here or factor two
is the drought we're not doing too bad here in southeastern wisconsin abnormally dry in a few
spots but we got quite a bit of rain on the way coming up as well in fact maybe over a half an
inch to an inch of rain monday into parts of tuesday so not concerned from a drought standpoint
for us but you see the difference right look up to the northwest and this is significant or extreme
drought here that can really cause issues for the leaves to not be as vibrant so you take some of
the cold weather that they're having but more so the drought and it may not be as vibrant in some
of those areas so it's actually a plus for us here in the southern part of the state that we're
not dealing with any major drought type issues so we you want the sunny and kind of cool ish mornings
that really does help you don't want anything too terribly hot but i think you know 60s you know
40s to 60s for lows and highs is a pretty good recipe for good peak color now what about timing
in terms of the peak color season now the north woods of wisconsin generally the first week of
october southern wisconsin the last week of october to the first week of november is the
current forecast so this has to hold for a while longer in other words you know this is just the
beginning of kind of what we're watching for in terms of these various conditions but again
temperature and moisture and sunshine matters as well you do want a lot of sunshine there as well
so that those are the factors there now just to broaden the view out a little bit especially
across the country and i think that this is really telling first of all the leaf season always
beautiful in the northeast maine continues to be under a drought along with parts of new hampshire
and vermont then you look at the eastern seaboard there are patches in the carolinas here that are
under that extreme drought where i'm looking at here is towards ashville north carolina the blue
ridge mountains blue ridge parkway if you've ever been gorgeous boom to ashville north carolina
probably one of the best leaf shows in the country if you ever get out there to that part of the
country they don't look too bad drought wise at least in that part of the state of north carolina
then you get down towards the red river oklahoma texas new mexico colorado i mean look at all of
that drought now you're kind of even shifting more from the leaf color change more to big time water
issues and that's always been an issue in the rockies there is water rights and water issues
and this is a big deal they need rain they need snow out there and again we'll see how the winter
unfolds with el nino and all of that the super el nino that we have in place right now a warmer
drier winter expected here in the upper midwest so that kind of puts it all together christina
i think our leaf season is going to be looking pretty good as long as this pattern sticks around
at least here in the southern part of the state but isn't that wild that there's so many different
factors and one other one i didn't talk about christina is the wind i mean if we get super
strong winds and the leaves blow off the trees well there goes that so we don't want to have too
strong of winds there either tom you always i always learn something from you i swear this is
so interesting um so okay so let's do a recap for the top three things we need to either stay
or happen absolutely so let me zoom back in here so number one we don't want it to be too cold
okay so you you don't want a deep freeze number two you want to have enough rain you don't want
to have you know super soaking rains but you don't want to be in an extreme drought right you want
that happy medium and number three you want enough sunshine and kind of fall like temperatures you
know 60s low 70s that's perfect 40s in the morning nice and crisp but you don't want too cold and you
don't want to dry either so that's really those are the two main things that we're going to be
looking for and again the peak in southern wisconsin late october to early november tom
do you have a favorite place to see the leaves real quick can i make an admission i have never
been up to the chapel at holy hill i was just there a couple weeks were you gorgeous gorgeous
so that's on my list this year and i'm ashamed to even say that being from here but that i mean
it's probably one of the most beautiful places in the state oh and especially if we get the
beautiful leaves this fall so you have to go and then we'll check back in with you sounds good
all right tom thanks so much we will be back after this quick two-minute break
we continue to follow breaking news tonight republican candidate for governor tom tiffany
is safe after his plane made an emergency water landing in lake wausau his campaign says the
plane lost power as they were flying back from a campaign event yesterday they say after the
got out of the plane and swam to a shallow area of the lake within 15 minutes the wausau fire
department rescued them from the lake we did hear from tiffany earlier today in an emotional press
conference take a listen i have 12 stitches up in my eyebrow and uh but other than that just a few
scratches and um we are just really fortunate we're really fortunate that god is looking after us
last night and we're also really fortunate that the first responders those behind me the fire
department the sheriff's department as well as the city of wausau police for their quick response
we're really fortunate for what you did and i can't thank them enough for helping us in this
situation i have to say that the gravity of this is probably just hitting me at this point
because we were making jokes every step of the way last night though we knew it was a serious
situation and um but we um we tried to keep it light through the whole thing and um we're just
really fortunate that we had a skilled pilot who knew what he's doing as we were going down
after we lost power and just really fortunate he knew what he was doing and from what i understand
from len he pulled up the landing gear for those of you familiar with planes if you leave your
landing gear down i guess when you do a water landing your plane can cartwheel he was savvy
enough and quick enough to think about we got to make sure and pull that landing gear up he did that
and might have saved us as a result of doing that so anyhow um it's quite a night quite a day and
just grateful for the lord for sparing us to see another day on the other side of the aisle
he wishes tiffany a quick recovery our ben hansen is following this story for us tonight he will
have reports from wasa at nine and ten you can also find tiffany's whole news conference and
all of the latest updates on fox6now.com and fox local it's a cool sunday starting to officially
feel like fall and i feel like this is the time where i turn off my heat and air conditioning and
let it rip it's comfortable tom yes and your energy bill appreciates it right you you appreciate
the lower energy bills right oh for sure yeah no it's great because you just kind of let mother
nature take the course and tell you what up in the north woods and places like tomah there's a frost
advisory tonight it's going to get pretty chilly up there in the blue shaded areas temperatures in
the 30s overnight not for us but i'll tell you away from the lake temperatures in the 40s by
now we talked a few minutes ago about the drought and you'll notice that the drought not doing too
bad here overall but we could use a little bit of rain and well guess what we're about to get some
rain because we do have a storm system on the way for us here and that's going to be making its way
in tomorrow so let's talk more about our current weather because the sun has come back out here we
are at 67 degrees it's in the 60s dew points in the 40s wind is out of the northwest temperatures
are in the 60s across the board but with the clear skies overnight these temperatures are going to
drop towards the lower dew points here so the cool air filling on in and we have the clear skies now
in places that system with the clouds and light rain that move through midday moves away from us
so for the next couple of hours temperatures drop through the 60s we're going to be in the 50s late
this evening 40s overnight and then christina more rain tomorrow i'll time that out for you
in a few minutes back over to you at least it's raining not snow yet there you go i like it
friday the nation paused to remember the tragedy of september 11th attacks they brought our nation
to a standstill grounding flights closing businesses and schools but in newsrooms like
ours journalists found a way to inform 25 years later sam kramer with the story of 9-11 from those
who told it on fox six spring fashions for next year are now showing in new york a lot can change
in 25 years but the story has not here 71 it started out as a sunny september day in milwaukee
beautiful i vividly remember blue skies it was tuesday um katrina and i were anchoring which was
rare and whenever we got together we just it was just it was giggle fest kim murphy and katrina
cravey co-anchored fox six wake up produced by kelly stoop and as they went to close the seven
o'clock show i remember sitting there at the desk and seeing like a little bit of wire copy pop up
on the computer this set of biplane went into the world trade center and the meteorologist at the
time got in my ear and was like kelly look at the networks they're they're showing new york
and there's some sort of smoke what what's going on we have breaking news this morning out of new
york what you're looking at right now is a live picture of the world trade center according to
witnesses a twin engine plane has just literally flown right into the top of the world trade center
you can see from this live picture that smoke is just pouring out of it right now we have no
word on injuries this just recently happened we will bring you the most updated information
as soon as we get it but judging by these pictures here you can see
that it looks like a disastrous accident we don't know how the people are inside but we will let you
know and stay tuned to the fox six wake up news milwaukee's only local news from 5 39 continues
at eight and i do remember just kind of like i think all of us are processing it at the same time
because we see the smoke yeah we knew there was a fire but but at the same time you see this
jet liner so it couldn't have been a replay because but at the time i mean that just didn't
make sense and then we realized it was the second plane that another plane had gone in we all knew
that this was not something we were going to pull away from it was not something like it was just
you were just sort of jaw dropped watching going what is this in nine o'clock is when the newsroom
starts for the day and so everyone was coming into work as this was happening i was up early
because i had to do the radio sometimes i filled in on bob and brian on what was then laser 103 now
the hog we had sesame street on and uh you know i got a call from my wife and she said hey have
you seen what's going on and i said what are you talking about and she said turn on the tv
when i turn on the tv that's when i saw the second plane hit the second tower and i'm describing to
people on the radio what i'm seeing and saying all right for those of you who are driving and
let me just picture what we're seeing now is this this and this and as i'm doing this
a light bulb went off and and i said i gotta get to my day job it was uh drop my daughter
off at school take my son to daycare and uh was get into the building as quickly as i could
and what i remember is that there were moms playing with their kids at this little park
and this is pre-cell phone and i'm thinking oh my god they don't know they don't know about this yet
i'm willing to bet that this and it's almost like you could feel the innocence
being zapped out of that little park there was no doubt in the control room
fox six would stick with network coverage you know yet uh looks like i can't imagine us doing
anything from here on out soon local updates came every hour as safety concerns rippled across the
country 10 p.m producer kerry doctor and so many others came in to help i think i spent all morning
in all early afternoon back in our technical operations room just monitoring feeds and
logging and marking tapes and stuff like that so that we would know what was where
ted perry joined cravey on the desk breaking news good morning everyone ted perry along with
katrina cravey in the fox six studios to say the least this has been an awful morning in america
we are cutting into fox coverage now to let you know how milwaukee is reacting to the terrorist
attacks both in new york city and in washington dc and possibly in pennsylvania i think that was
the biggest fear that everybody had in the newsroom and throughout the the milwaukee market
was just you know what's going to happen next i believe they sent kim out to the airport and they
left me the substitute anchor on the desk and we had a landline underneath the desk like a real
just landline phone and i remember calling my mother when it finally went where the national
news took it for a little bit and my mom's in california and she said where are you and are you
okay and i said i'm in milwaukee i'm on the news desk and i am not okay right because i was like
okay now they became real and we saw that video of people jumping out of the buildings and i wasn't
on yet but i knew that they were going to cut back to us and i needed to be ready and to be
more professional i just remember trying to be calm i'd been on the anchor desk for a few years
literally like two years and um but at one point and it still gets me when i talk about this
at one point the death toll was estimated to be as high as 8 000 and i remember saying on air my
voice is cracking just like i'm almost reliving it again i said on air to joyce that's the
population of my hometown of baraboo and i thought it can't be that bad and they later
kind of it's funny you know i hadn't thought about that in a long time you turned on the radio
there was no music yeah because every single station they were talking about this
it just everything so i mean for that entire week there were no commercials there was no
television it was just wall-to-wall coverage i mean now we have the pandemic to kind of
but it was even that amplified eventually shifts returned to normal and employees headed home
almost to face reality off the air i do remember at the end of the day after i don't remember how
many hours we were here it might have been like i don't know 13 14 hours when the next crew was
coming in i remember trying to go out to the lake and try to relax about and in hearing the birds
and i was thinking they don't know what just happened right like the wildlife here in milwaukee
and i know that sounds kind of weird but i was just like our whole world changed and yet when
you're out at the lakefront later in the evening it's like it didn't happen here but it happened
all of us i just couldn't wait to get home but i knew also that you know we had a job to do here and
we would see each other and you know that time will come a lot of the stories that followed
that night in the days weeks months ahead focused on hope and on community but that day a focus on
fast changing facts helped to find what this station is still focused on i was just really
proud of the people here that day i was proud of the the industry that day i was proud of our
colleagues at the other stations i know everybody's doing the best they could and that was our sam
kramer reporting still ahead its roots go all the way back to the 13th century with the current
version of the sport being codified in the 1850s its popularity is on the rise and will be on
display in milwaukee this weekend tim van boren goes beyond the game coming up
if you've ever seen those flat well manicured parcels of green grass at milwaukee's lake park
and wondered what are they used for this is the story for you tim van boren goes beyond the game
a bird's eye view provides a unique perspective on the sport of croquet first of all it's a game
for everyone it doesn't matter your age gender ability golf croquet in particular is a game that
you can learn very quickly get the basics of it and then once you're hooked you just stay at it
cheryl bromley of sheboygan is a member of the united states croquet association's hall of fame
even as a world class level player she relishes the chance to educate so we have a starting
corner that's back there by the yellow flag and you there's a circuit that you follow on the lawn
you want to think of your swing as a pendulum with a backswing and a follow-through and a tick
tock rhythm all right okay we're going to shoot through our feet so this is another difference
from backyard to regulation croquet try and have your feet running parallel with your mallet there
you are okay that's the track if you will that you want it to because any deviation hips shoulders
that's where your ball is gonna go yeah so the lawn that we play on the court is actually the
size of probably two tennis courts put together the accuracy from long distance sometimes it's
just remarkable beautiful hoop shooting from long distance all that it's just it's yeah it's awesome
how much clearance is there these now are set at 1 16th of an inch so there's two stanchions the
ball there's just a 16th of an inch cheryl can get even the greenest get it greenest beginner
rolling in this sport look at you well done that's really good it was my teacher that's really good
that's really good all right would you like me to show you a jump shot absolutely okay i'm gonna hit
the ball above the equator and follow through there whoa so even though i was in prime position
you beat me on this yeah so i would score the point are you a particularly good jumper
i love jumping i could tell you were like oh i want to show you that yeah croquet's appeal is
broad from teenage national champions to aging athletes and as a result its popularity is peaking
it actually is booming right now look at that look at that that's the case from any angle
in milwaukee at lake park tim van boer fox six sports welcome back to fox six news at five this
is the time of year where i'm sad to see summer go i don't want to accept it but i also love
the cooler fall weather that we're getting tom absolutely you felt it today right christina i
mean temperatures in the 60s and very very falling let's take a look show you what's going on with a
live look over downtown milwaukee where we have the sunshine in place after some cloud cover
and some light rain earlier so 67 that was it today very fall like 58 are low this morning
right on target there 629 our sunrise this morning and 705 our sunset this evening now
look at this a frost advisory in effect especially for the north woods of wisconsin and out towards
tomah that runs overnight tonight where temperatures are going to drop into the 30s
okay now it's not going to be that cold around here but many areas away from the lake will be
in the 40s by morning so here we are at 67 degrees the northwest wind and you know we often
talk about ingredients right when we talk about meteorology several ingredients in place number
one the wind and note the direction that's going to be important here in just a minute dew point 45
that's ingredient number two low dew points drier air that allows the temperature to drop air
pressure that's looking good by the way tonight so let's talk about this temperatures are in the 60s
right now pretty uniform across southeastern wisconsin but look at these dew points in the 40s
and techeetah and plymouth your dew points are in the low 40s right now what direction is the
wind out of the northwest right so it's pulling in that cooler drier air mass so that means the
dew point is going to be dropping throughout the night number one the wind will gradually get
lighter and that means temperatures will drop into the 40s in most areas as a result by morning so
again it comes back to all of these ingredients kind of like cooking here where you've got to
have all these ingredients for everything to come together and everything's coming together tonight
for a cool morning tomorrow dew point will be around 50 by the afternoon tomorrow one little
spike on tuesday then we drop on wednesday we will spike again by friday and saturday with a
second storm system coming in but all in all not too bad in terms of humidity this week there goes
that storm system moving south we have the clear skies on the back side of it our next storm system
is up in the pacific northwest that comes in starting tomorrow now from a severe thunderstorm
standpoint not too concerned in fact the storm prediction center has removed us from the marginal
risk now that being said we still might have a squirrely storm or two overnight tomorrow night
let's talk about it with sky vision plus show you more specifically what we're expecting here and
i'm going to start you out at 8 a.m because we're going to wake up to sunshine most of the day
after 2 to 3 p.m here comes the rain and this is going to be rain with just a few embedded
rumbles here and some embedded heavy rain showers as well here's 5 p.m now we'll take you to 8 o'clock
the rain is starting to shift north look off to the west thunderstorms popping out in iowa that's
going to be the question for us overnight tomorrow night you see we get a little bit of what we would
a dry slot here this is the warm sector coming through strong south winds tomorrow night and
then between about 2 and 5 a.m here we have thunderstorms pushing through again might have
a strong one or two nothing major i think heavy rain is the greater threat a half an inch to an
inch of rain possible out of this and then a couple of rain showers and maybe a rumble on
tuesday let's put it all together for you here i get most of the day dry tomorrow rain after 2
to 3 p.m thunderstorms overnight 70 for a high 76 on tuesday with a chance for thunderstorms
showers and cooler on wednesday then there's storm system number two friday and saturday
with highs in the 70s again a very fall-like crisp night on the way tonight we'll have more
news for you after the break finally tonight crowds gather in denver in a denver park to
cheer on a roller skating rookie take a look i hear someone go yes queen she looks like she gets
up though and she has some uh padding in case she fell this woman she posted on tiktok in august
saying she would try skating for the first time in her life the video received tens of thousands
of views and on the big day a lot of people showed up to cheer her on after a few falls she did make
it to the finish line look at that so proud hats off to her what is the way is she wearing is that
a pillow it's padding smart that's amazing oh i love it oh there's no way i could do that
could you like a crowd yes no way i'm not gonna lie those skates though i think are a little bit
easier when you have the two wheels and the oh yeah yeah i say this without trying it though
that's not fair so she looked off to her absolutely and we're gonna enjoy the cool
weather oh tonight yeah 40s in most areas by morning we'll update you tonight at 9 and 10
thanks for watching
